The Causal Veil Carries Structure

Kane Baker has found a good reversal.

The standard epistemic-access objection to mathematical Platonism says that abstract objects cannot be known because they cannot affect us.

Numbers do not reflect light. Sets do not leave tracks. Possible worlds do not press against the skin. If an object stands outside the causal order, what could connect a belief to it strongly enough for the belief to count as knowledge?

Concrete objects seem to have the easy answer here. A hand reflects light. Light enters the eye. The retina changes. Neural activity follows. A belief about the hand arrives through an intelligible causal route.

But in The Causal Veil Problem, Baker asks why this route should count as an epistemic advantage.

A causal chain does not deliver the object whole. It produces an effect in the observer. That same terminal effect might have arisen from another source: a dream, a simulation, a brain in a vat, an evil demon, a sufficiently elaborate machine. Even when the source really is a hand, the hand appears differently through distance, lighting, mirrors, X-rays, pressure, microscopy, injury, and every other transformation available to a physical body.

Causal access therefore seems to generate two problems.

  • Deviant causal chains: the presentation may have arisen from something other than the object we believe produced it.
  • Legitimate presentations: the object supports many appearances, while causal interaction itself does not announce which appearance reveals what the object really is.

Baker uses these problems to turn the ordinary objection around.

  • Causal isolation makes knowledge of abstract objects mysterious.

  • Causal interaction introduces distortion, substitution, perspective, and uncertainty about the source.

So the physical world may be no easier to know than the abstract one.

He leaves one darker route open at the end. Perhaps neither side wins. Noncausal knowledge lacks an explanatory bridge. Causal knowledge disappears behind a veil.

Knowledge fails either way.

The reversal succeeds against a crude picture of causal knowledge.

The skeptical conclusion depends on treating mediation as opacity.

That step does not hold.


Causation Was Never a Transparent Pipe.

Baker is right that a causal chain cannot function as an automatic certificate of knowledge.

The hand does not travel through the optic nerve. Every stage transforms what came before it.

  • Light interacts with surfaces.
  • The eye selects a narrow range of electromagnetic structure.
  • The lens bends.
  • The retina samples.
  • Neural systems compress, compare, predict, discard, and stabilize.
  • Language cuts the resulting field into objects, boundaries, properties, and names.
  • Memory receives another transformed trace.

The sentence “the hand caused my belief” leaves most of the epistemic work untouched.

Which differences survived the route? Which were erased? Which were introduced by the instrument? What made the belief answer to the hand instead of to the light, the retina, the visual cortex, the word hand, or the larger body of which the hand is part?

A causal connection can carry error. It can amplify noise. It can preserve the wrong feature. It can connect the right object to the wrong conclusion.

Baker is therefore justified in rejecting the easy move from caused by X to knowledge of X.

Modal Path Ethics already has a vocabulary for this problem.

An instrument enters the field it measures. A map, metric, lens, diagnosis, equation, archive, interface, or theory makes some transitions easier to detect and others harder to imagine. It preserves certain distinctions, compresses others, and changes what the next observer can do.

The instrument has a path.

That path can deform contact.

It can also preserve contact in a transformed form.

The causal veil argument establishes mediation. It has not established blankness.


Swedenborg’s Useful Pressure.

Emanuel Swedenborg gives Modal Path Ethics a strange and useful way to state the missing distinction.

His doctrine of correspondences treats the visible world as an effect-bearing expression of deeper causes. A natural form does not have to resemble its cause like a photograph. It can answer to that cause through an ordered relation between levels. An expression corresponds to an emotion. Spoken words correspond to thought. An effect carries something of the structure that produced it while existing in a different medium and under different conditions.

Modal Path Ethics does not need Swedenborg’s complete theological architecture. It needs the pressure his concept places against opacity:

A mediated appearance can remain structurally answerable to what produced it.

Correspondence is stronger than resemblance and weaker than identity.

A facial expression is not the feeling itself. The expression can be performed dishonestly. It can be misread. Culture can change how it is displayed. Injury can interfere with it.

Still, the face is not therefore sealed away from the inner life. Expression belongs to the route by which inner state becomes publicly available.

The same structure appears in causal knowledge.

A retinal pattern is not the hand. An X-ray is not the hand. A pressure map is not the hand. Each can correspond to the hand by preserving specific relations generated through contact with it.

The word correspondence is useful here because it refuses two fantasies at once.

  • The presentation is not a transparent copy.
  • The presentation is also not an arbitrary replacement.

It is an effect produced through a path.

The epistemic question becomes more exact:

Which relations survive the path, and how can the field correct us when we misunderstand them?

This is a different problem from penetrating an opaque barrier. The causal path becomes an object of inquiry rather than a wall declared impenetrable in advance.


Correspondence Under Correction.

Swedenborg’s correspondence cannot simply be imported as an epistemology. His own system can assign stable spiritual meanings to natural forms through a sacred interpretive architecture that ordinary empirical correction does not govern.

That is precisely where Modal Path Ethics has to intervene.

A correspondence becomes epistemically useful when it remains corrigible by the field.

Call this correspondence under correction.

The presentation and the source occupy different levels or media. Their relation is established through constraint rather than resemblance alone. The relation remains open to revision when new contact shows that the proposed mapping was wrong, partial, or overextended.

This requires several things.

  • The transformation must be describable enough to inspect.
  • Independent routes should fail differently.
  • Interventions should alter presentations in patterned ways.
  • Failed expectations must remain available as evidence.
  • No single instrument may declare itself identical with the field.

A sacred correspondence protected from correction can become a sealed answer-channel. A scientific correspondence protected from correction can do the same thing while wearing different clothes.

The failure is sovereignty.

  • A correspondence dictionary becomes dangerous when it can assign the hidden meaning of every event and cannot receive an event that revises the dictionary.

  • A causal model becomes dangerous when every failed prediction is redescribed as hidden complexity while the model retains command.

The structure is shared:

  • appearance;
  • assigned depth;
  • interpretive instrument;
  • protected authority;
  • correction routed away.

Modal Path Ethics can use Swedenborg only by refusing this closure. Correspondence must remain a contact instrument. It cannot become owner of the unseen.


The Veil Is a Family of Transformations.

Baker’s argument often treats the causal route as though it leads from one hidden object to one terminal presentation.

Let the source be X. Let a causal or instrumental transformation be T. Let the resulting presentation be P.

P = T(X)

One presentation may underdetermine its source. Several different sources may produce the same result under one transformation. Some information may be lost completely.

Nothing surprising follows yet.

Inquiry rarely depends on one transformation.

P₁ = T₁(X)
P₂ = T₂(X)
P₃ = T₃(X)

Vision, touch, X-ray, ultrasound, dissection, motion, testimony, measurement, and intervention do not reproduce the same presentation. Their differences matter because they each preserve and lose different relations.

An X-ray does not defeat ordinary vision by showing bones where vision showed skin. It adds a transformation whose characteristic relation to tissue is understood well enough to answer another question. Touch does not refute the X-ray by producing pressure instead of bone contrast. The instruments correspond to the same active structure through different paths.

The family can constrain the source more strongly than any member could alone.

This is why parallax matters. This is why changing distance matters. This is why replication matters. This is why independent laboratories matter. This is why an instrument should be removed, altered, blinded, recalibrated, or replaced. This is why a failed intervention carries more epistemic force than another declaration that the preferred appearance feels obvious.

The causal route introduces possible distortion.

It also introduces handles for correction.

A noncausal domain may have proof, necessity, invariance, and internal constraint. It does not gain an epistemic advantage simply by avoiding causal noise. Removing a potentially distorting channel also removes the correction pressures available through that channel.

No messenger can deceive you where no messenger arrives.

That does not count as correspondence.


Deviant Chains and Total Simulation.

Baker’s first major problem concerns deviant causal chains.

An experience as of two hands could have been caused by two hands. It could also have been caused by a machine stimulating a brain in a vat.

No later experience conclusively solves the problem, because the machine could simulate the later experience, too.

This is the familiar strength of total skeptical scenarios: they absorb every attempted test into the hypothesis.

The scenario deserves respect. But it does not establish what Baker needs.

A brain-in-a-vat hypothesis capable of preserving every public and private constraint of the experienced world has reproduced the whole local correspondence field.

It must reproduce:

  • stable changes under movement;
  • coordination between sight and touch;
  • injury and healing;
  • other observers;
  • instruments and their disagreements;
  • traces left by action;
  • resistance from matter;
  • failed predictions;
  • records of prior failure;
  • intervention and consequence.

The hidden substrate may differ radically. The experienced relations still possess structure.

This distinction already matters elsewhere in Modal Path Ethics. A simulated world does not become ethically empty because its substrate lies outside ordinary access. A simulated body can still be injured. A simulated ecology can still collapse. A simulated society can still close paths for its inhabitants. Substrate uncertainty changes the account of implementation. It does not erase the active field in which continuance occurs.

The skeptical hypothesis therefore widens possibility without automatically defeating local knowledge.

Modal Path Ethics distinguishes possibility from reachability.

A describable rival explanation is possible in a thin sense. A live explanatory rival requires a path from extant evidence. It needs traces, contradictions, anomalies, dependencies, or interventions that raise it above unrestricted invention.

The vat scenario may be impossible to eliminate from inside total experience. That does not make it equally reachable as an explanation.

Knowledge does not require the annihilation of every story capable of reproducing the endpoint. It requires disciplined orientation among the explanations the field gives us reason to treat as active.

Skepticism repeatedly promotes conceivable alternatives into live rivals without supplying the transition.


Legitimate Presentations Do Not Need a Crown.

Baker’s second problem presses harder.

A hand supports countless presentations. From far away, it becomes a point. Against the eye, it becomes darkness and fragments of light. Under X-ray, it becomes bone structure. Under magnification, familiar boundaries dissolve into tissue and cellular organization. A mirror can distort it. A surgical cross-section can reveal relations invisible from the surface.

  • Which one is legitimate?

Baker argues that ordinary beliefs about the hand presuppose some privileged class of presentations.

If every presentation is simply one causal effect among others, no presentation appears entitled to reveal the hand’s real nature.

The hidden assumption is that legitimacy must belong to a presentation in itself.

It does not.

Legitimacy belongs to a relation among:

  • the question being asked;
  • the transformation used;
  • the differences preserved;
  • the differences destroyed;
  • the predictions enabled;
  • the interventions supported;
  • the correction paths left open.

The ordinary visible hand is legitimate for reaching, gripping, and coordinating movement under ordinary conditions. The X-ray is legitimate for examining bones. Microscopy is legitimate for cellular questions. Touch is legitimate for pressure, texture, temperature, and shape through contact. None becomes the sovereign presentation of handhood.

Plurality does not eliminate structure.

A hand usually has five digits because digit organization coordinates across anatomy, movement, touch, development, injury, skeleton, tool use, ordinary vision, and other observers. Some hands have a different number. The variation remains detectable because the concept answers to bodies rather than to an official image.

Object boundaries are also question-sensitive. The hand can be studied as an organ, a bodily region, a biomechanical system, a developmental process, a social instrument, a legal object, or part of a person whose agency cannot be reduced to anatomy.

Several cuts can be real.

The field does not owe us one final partition before knowledge begins.

Baker is correct that causal contact alone does not select the proper object. Inquiry selects and revises object boundaries through explanatory and practical discipline.

Some cuts preserve more of the relevant dependency structure. Others produce failure, contradiction, or uselessness.

No presentation receives a crown.

The correspondence succeeds where the field continues to answer through it.


Abstract Objects Still Need Instruments.

Baker’s strategic conclusion remains important.

The physicalist cannot wave toward causal contact and declare empirical epistemology complete. Concrete objects do not become easy to know because they occupy space and time.

This weakens one version of the epistemic-access objection to mathematical Platonism.

It does not establish direct access to abstract objects.

Mathematics also uses instruments:

  • symbols;
  • definitions;
  • axioms;
  • diagrams;
  • proofs;
  • models;
  • equivalence relations;
  • computational checks;
  • notation;
  • trained intuition;
  • public correction.

Numbers have no sensory appearance on the Platonist account. Mathematical practice still requires decisions about representation, identity, preservation, relevance, and inference.

Baker discusses the Benacerraf identification problem. Von Neumann ordinals and Zermelo ordinals can realize arithmetic while assigning different set-theoretic structures to the numbers. Ordinary arithmetic survives the difference.

That survival matters because it suggests that mathematical knowledge may track invariant relations across representations more securely than it tracks the hidden intrinsic identity of independently existing numerical objects.

A structuralist will find this result welcoming. A Platonist can also use it. Neither position is established by the causal veil.

The useful lesson is broader:

Epistemic access depends on preserved structure and correction practices across representations, whether the domain is causal or abstract.

The argument moves the debate away from the fantasy that one side possesses an effortless bridge.

It does not place both sides inside the same total darkness.


Active Information Against Opacity.

Baker’s causal veil becomes especially dangerous when the presentation is treated as passive residue.

An effect appears. The cause remains hidden. The observer receives a surface that could have come from almost anywhere. The presentation becomes epistemically inert until an impossible guarantee identifies its source.

Modal Path Ethics rejects that picture.

Information is active when it changes what can be tested, inferred, built, challenged, or repaired. A presentation does not have to contain the whole source to alter the reachable field of inquiry.

A shadow supports movement. A failed reading reveals an instrument boundary. A repeated discrepancy identifies a missing variable. A distortion that changes predictably under rotation tells us something about the lens. An institution that repeatedly loses the same testimony reveals structure through the pattern of disappearance.

The field answers through consequences.

This does not turn every effect into truth. It gives effects an epistemic role inside a correction process.

The contrast can be stated cleanly:

  • Opacity: mediation blocks access because the source never appears without transformation.
  • Active correspondence: transformation preserves enough structure to support intervention, comparison, and correction.

The second account explains why an instrument can be fallible without becoming useless.

It also explains why failed instruments can become evidence.

The distortion has a shape.

The shape can be compared.

The comparison changes the next move.


Swedenborg’s Danger.

Swedenborg helps because correspondence gives mediation a positive structure. He also supplies a helpful warning.

Once an interpreter believes the visible world carries hidden meaning, the temptation is to promote interpretation into jurisdiction.

  • Every object receives an assigned inward significance.
  • Every event becomes confirmation.
  • Every disagreement reveals the other person’s spiritual condition.
  • Every failed reading is repaired by adding another invisible layer.
  • The instrument becomes protected by the depth it claims to disclose.

This is the sacred version of the causal veil’s worst failure.

The unseen becomes sovereign because no ordinary correction can reach it.

Modal Path Ethics therefore keeps only the part of correspondence that survives contact.

The outer state can answer to a deeper structure. The mapping must remain vulnerable to error. Several correspondences may compete. The field may expose a better one. Some layers may remain unknown. A powerful metaphor does not acquire causal authority by feeling exact.

Swedenborg’s concept becomes useful only after sovereignty is removed from it.

Correspondence is a hypothesis about how levels remain related.

It is never permission to own the hidden level.


The Modal Path Ethics Epistemology.

The causal veil problem asks how a knower reaches an object through transformations that may distort it.

Modal Path Ethics answers with corrigible correspondence inside an active field.

The method has six parts.

1. Contact.

Something outside the current description constrains what can happen next. Contact appears as successful prediction, resistance, failed action, unexpected consequence, or stable dependence.

2. Plural instrumentation.

Different instruments approach different relations. Their agreement matters. Their structured disagreement matters more.

3. Intervention.

Action tests whether the proposed dependencies answer as expected. Intervention never supplies perfect metaphysical certainty. It changes the field in ways a model must survive.

4. Trace retention.

Failed predictions, anomalies, prior models, and damaged paths remain available. A field that deletes its failures trains itself toward false confidence.

5. Correction.

The account changes without converting every prior contact into nonsense. Some relations survive revision. Others are localized as instrument effects, category errors, or distorted presentations.

6. Non-sovereignty.

No instrument may identify itself with the field. No model, perception, proof system, sacred correspondence, institution, or framework receives final immunity from correction.

Knowledge under this account is neither possession nor defeat.

It is the disciplined maintenance of correspondence across a field that can still respond.


The Ruling.

Kane Baker has identified a real failure in causal epistemology.

A causal chain does not certify its own source. A presentation does not reveal every property of the object that produced it. Direct realism does not erase transformation. Concrete objects do not become epistemically simple because they can touch us.

The standard epistemic-access objection to abstract objects therefore loses one of its easiest contrasts.

The causal veil still fails as an argument for general opacity.

Mediation is structured. Effects can correspond to causes across different media and levels. A presentation can preserve relations without copying the source. Several transformations can constrain what one transformation leaves underdetermined. Intervention, replication, disagreement, trace, and correction turn causal paths into epistemic instruments.

Swedenborg supplies the useful term. Correspondence names the possibility that an outer effect remains answerable to an inner or deeper structure without becoming identical to it.

Modal Path Ethics adds the condition Swedenborg’s own system cannot always guarantee:

The correspondence must remain corrigible by the field.

That condition blocks both crude realism and total skepticism.

The hand does not enter the mind whole. The number does not need to appear as a sensory object. Neither fact settles the epistemology. What matters is whether the instrument preserves structure strongly enough for error to become findable and correction to remain reachable.

The causal veil is real as transformation, loss, and risk.

It is not empty.

It carries correspondence.

And correspondence, while no guarantee of truth, gives reality a path by which it can still correct the story told about it.
