FM27 was not large enough to end human life. It was still large enough that this distinction did not comfort anyone responsible for moving it. The impact corridor crossed two oceans and, with smaller probability, a continent dense with things that had not been designed to become craters. The player evaluated gravity tractors, nuclear standoff bursts, ion-beam shepherding, kinetic impactors, surface ablation, and combinations whose names existed only because someone had to put labels in a simulation. Time made most of them academic. Mass made several absurd. Politics removed fewer than expected. The winning path was almost disappointingly physical: two kinetic vehicles, launched separately, striking months apart, each changing FM27 by an amount that could have been lost inside a rounding error if applied at the end rather than years before it. The first impactor hit twenty-seven meters from its aim point. The second hit closer. Telescopes measured the ejecta. Radar measured the velocity change. The validators received new data and rebuilt the orbit without sharing code or conclusions. Their miss distances clustered more tightly than the mission requirement. Earth fell out of the future corridor. Emergency launch reservations dissolved. Freight that had been held for planetary-defense hardware moved again. The special observation network collapsed back into ordinary astronomy one instrument at a time. In the player, millions of branches became irrelevant at once. The achieved momentum transfer differed from the planned value by less than two hundredths of one percent. There were celebrations in data the player did not need to interpret as celebration: networks saturated with repeated images, public displays queried far beyond normal load, observatories receiving requests with no scientific content at all. It kept a sample. The rest was duplication. FM27 continued across the Solar System on the new line everyone had asked for. The game was closed.

*A civilization that refuses to act until every person can reproduce every inference has chosen paralysis.*

*Sometimes the machine finds the cancer. Sometimes the warning is real. Sometimes the bridge is failing. Sometimes a rock is coming, and waiting for universal comprehension is simply another way to let it arrive.*

*Capability deserves consequences. Better evidence should move decisions. A system that repeatedly sees farther than we do should be trusted differently from one that does not.*

*The maneuver succeeds because people allow competence to matter.*

*So far, they are right to.*
