Modal Path Ethics survived the[***Problem of Time***](https://modalpathethics.com/the-problem-of-time/).

Physics has now removed the room in which the hearing was being held.

This was not part of the original agreement.

Back in June, Modal Path Ethics discovered that its constant talk of *futures* did not require one universal cosmic clock, one privileged Now, or a neat metaphysical conveyor belt carrying reality from past through present into future.

The old shorthand was:

> A future is a reachable continuation from a field state.

That survived. The recent *Harm as Contraction of Reachable Continuation* work has made it more exact.

An **extant field-slice** is reality as presently active, historically arrived, and capable of further lawful transition.

An **extant locus** is a bearer inside that field.

A **continuation** is a path-region or family of downstream configurations available to that locus from its present condition.

And **reachability** is field-relative and bearer-relative: a continuation is reachable when the present field actually supports a viable sequence of transitions connecting the bearer to it under the conditions that obtain.

So time could still be fundamental, emergent, relational, local, curved, thermodynamic, or in some other way professionally uncooperative.

Modal Path Ethics needed ordered continuation.

The clock could go.

Apparently, physics took this as encouragement.

On August 21, *Popular Mechanics* published an article with the *extremely* calming title [**“On the Deepest Level of Reality, Time and Space Don’t Exist, Physicist Claims.”**](https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a73478040/deepest-level-of-reality-time-and-space/?ref=modalpathethics.com)

The article concerns **Group Field Theory**, one of several research programs attempting to reconcile quantum theory with gravity. In the picture described by theoretical physicist Daniele Oriti, ordinary spacetime is not the fundamental arena in which the deepest physical objects sit.

The proposal goes further.

The fundamental entities are **pre-geometric**.

Ordinary spatial notions such as distance, curvature, and volume belong to a collective regime that emerges when enormous numbers of quantum-geometric degrees of freedom organize together.

Spacetime appears later.

Wonderful.

Just fantastic.

Modal Path Ethics has spent the last several months discussing fields, loci, paths, boundaries, reachability, contraction, locality, possibility space, continuation-generating structure, and the grain at which something becomes a bearer.

All of these words are now being asked to report individually for inspection.

This could be a huge problem.

- If a **field** in Modal Path Ethics secretly means an area in space,
  - we have a problem.
- If a **locus** secretly means a physical location,
  - we have a problem.
- If a **path** secretly means motion from one place to another,
  - we have a problem.
- If **reachability** secretly means physical proximity,
  - we have a problem.
- If **contraction** secretly means something geometrically getting smaller,
  - we have a problem.
- If a **boundary** secretly means a wall,
  - edge,
    - or perimeter,
      - we have a problem.

A moral framework that claims to operate beneath ordinary human narration should **probably** avoid discovering that its metaphysical foundations were assembled from the intuitive floor plan of a three-dimensional mammal.

So.

> **Time to check *everything*.**

---

## The Threat Is Real Enough.

First, the science needs to be stated carefully.

*Popular Mechanics* did not report the discovery that space has been abolished.

Group Field Theory remains one live approach to quantum gravity among several. It is mathematically ambitious, conceptually strange, technically developing, and still faces the enormous problem confronting most candidate theories of quantum gravity: connecting fundamental structure at inaccessible scales to observations capable of discriminating among competing theories.

Christian Wüthrich, a philosopher of physics quoted in the article, states the empirical problem plainly.

> **Testing these ideas is hard.**

Modal Path Ethics does not need Group Field Theory to be true for this exercise to matter.

A hostile test does not have to win physics before it can expose a hidden dependency in philosophy.

The source trail also goes considerably deeper than the magazine article.

In 2013, Oriti posted [**“Disappearance and emergence of space and time in quantum gravity.”**](https://arxiv.org/abs/1302.2849?ref=modalpathethics.com) The later journal version directly considers continuum spacetime emerging from the collective behavior of discrete, pre-geometric “atoms of quantum space.” The proposed transition into a geometric phase receives an appropriately dramatic name:

- **geometrogenesis.**

Radical.

A few years later, in [**“The universe as a quantum gravity condensate,”**](https://arxiv.org/abs/1612.09521?ref=modalpathethics.com) Oriti developed the cosmological picture further. The basic idea is that cosmology may function like a hydrodynamic description of more fundamental quantum-gravity degrees of freedom.

This analogy deserves care.

A **hurricane** is not secretly one large molecule. It is not lying to us.

**Wetness** is not an additional microscopic ingredient hiding inside the H₂O.

**Temperature** is not stamped individually onto every molecule in a gas by tiny men.

Collective structure can possess useful and physically real properties that do not belong to the constituents taken one at a time.

The Group Field Theory proposal asks us to take a similar possibility seriously for spacetime.

In 2023, Luca Marchetti, Oriti, Andreas Pithis, and Johannes Thürigen published [**“Mean-Field Phase Transitions in Tensorial Group Field Theory Quantum Gravity”**](https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.130.141501?ref=modalpathethics.com) in *Physical Review Letters*, strengthening the case for the condensate phase used in this research program.

In May 2026, Andrea Calcinari, Adrià Delhom, and Oriti posted [**“Collective excitations in quantum gravity condensates.”**](https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.18977?ref=modalpathethics.com) They pushed the condensate treatment beyond the simplest mean-field picture and derived collective excitations analogous, in a controlled mathematical sense, to phonons in ordinary Bose-Einstein condensates.

Then, on August 12, Roukaya Dekhil, Federico Greco, Stefano Liberati, and Oriti posted [**“Emergent scalar field dynamics in a cosmological spacetime from GFT quantum gravity.”**](https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.12003?ref=modalpathethics.com)

This one is where Modal Path Ethics leans forward and starts taking notes very quickly.

Their construction begins from fundamental Group Field Theory dynamics in a **fully relational framework**. Matter and geometry emerge together at the effective cosmological level.

Localization in space and time is itself defined relationally, with respect to a material reference frame.

Go ahead and read that sentence again.

> Localization comes back through relation.

It is very tempting here to say that the fundamental quanta exist “outside space and time.”

But don't.

**Outside** has already smuggled **a room** back into the ontology.

The safer claim is stranger:

> The fundamental description does not assign ordinary spacetime properties to the underlying entities at all.

There is no little quantum brick sitting at coordinate X waiting for enough friends to arrive so everyone can collectively invent **geometry**.

**Location** itself belongs to the later description.

Now the problem is properly armed.

---

## Search This Framework.

Modal Path Ethics has always used geometric language.

This was deliberate.

- Possibility **space**.
- Reachable **future-space**.
- **Paths**.
- **Fields**.
- **Loci**.
- **Boundaries**.
- **Contraction**.
- **Distance** between a damaged field and repair.

The language is useful because humans are extremely good at thinking through movement.

A *future* feels like somewhere we **can go**.

A *trap* feels like somewhere we **cannot leave**.

A *burden* feels like **difficult travel**.

*Repair* feels like **reopening a road**.

*Institutional capture* feels like **walls appearing around the doors**.

That imagery can reveal structure.

It can also conceal what the structure actually is.

The question is therefore not whether Modal Path Ethics uses spatial metaphors.

Obviously it does.

Constantly.

The question is whether those metaphors are doing foundational work.

Take away fundamental space.

> *What remains?*

---

## Field-Without-Space.

Start with the largest apparent casualty.

- **Field.**

A ***field*** sounds spatial immediately.

Physics uses the word for quantities distributed across spacetime. Agriculture uses it for land. Military language uses it for an operational area. Ordinary speech uses it for domains of activity.

Modal Path Ethics has **happily** borrowed all of these resonances.

[The recent *Contraction* work](https://modalpathethics.com/artificial-intelligence-needs-a-structural-ethics-layer/) lets us separate two things that older articles sometimes ran together.

An **extant field-slice** is:

> **reality as presently active, historically arrived, and capable of further lawful transition.**

That is the actual inherited situation: bodies, institutions, records, debts, trust, infrastructure, ecosystems, law, resources, damage, prior repair, and every other causally operative relation currently shaping what can happen next.

A **field**, in ordinary Modal Path Ethics analysis, is the structured domain of those relations, constraints, capacities, and transitions being tracked for the problem at hand.

That domain can be a hospital ward, a family, a legal system, a battlefield, a river basin, a school, a game, a supply chain, an institution, or a person sitting in a parked car while one decision changes what remains reachable.

Some of these have obvious spatial extension.

Some have boundaries that no surveyor could find.

The relevant structure was never the acreage.

A *family field* matters because persons, histories, obligations, dependencies, vulnerabilities, resources, memories, habits, powers, and available interventions stand in active relation.

A *legal field* matters because rules, authorities, evidence, deadlines, precedents, jurisdictions, institutions, rights, enforcement powers, and appeal routes stand in active relation.

- Put every participant in a different building and the *field* survives.
- Move the building three feet east and the *field* barely notices.
  - Destroy one critical **relation** and the field can change violently without anything visibly moving.

There is one important correction to make here.

> **A field is not automatically a bearer.**

A *field* is an analytical domain. It can contain extant loci, support their continuations, transmit burdens among them, and undergo structural change. A particular institution, ecosystem, population, or other organization inside that field may itself qualify as an extant locus.

That requires another test.

We will get there.

Space can participate in a field.

Physical location can strongly shape a field.

Distance can create resistance. Borders can create closure. Geography can determine whether food arrives, whether an army crosses, whether a patient reaches a hospital, whether an ecosystem remains connected.

None of that makes **space** the definition of the field.

The field was never the room. It was the active structure through which things could still affect what happened next.

> **FIELD: ALIVE.**

---

## Locus-Without-Location.

This one looks so, so much worse.

Just read that header back.

Modal Path Ethics chose the word ***locus***.

I could hardly have selected a term more eager to be mistaken for a point on a map.

The older website shorthand sometimes said shit like:

> A **locus** is where contraction can be borne.

That sentence was useful.

**It is also no longer good enough.**

The new *Harm as Contraction* paper explicitly blocks that shortcut because it is circular. We cannot identify a locus by saying it is whatever can be harmed, then identify harm by asking what happened to the locus.

The bearer has to be identified first.

The current definition is:

> **An extant locus is a diachronically integrated causal organization with a nonredundant successor structure at the relevant level of analysis.**

That is a much harder sentence.

Good. It should be.

The definition carries five tests.

1. **Extant** means instantiated and causally operative in the present field.
  1. A hypothetical person, imaginary institution, possible species, or counterfactual city is not made into a present bearer because we can describe it.
2. **Diachronically integrated** means the organization persists through change as an organized process rather than a coincidental collection.
  1. A thing can replace material, members, cells, workers, files, or components and still retain organized continuity.
3. **Causally organized** means components and relations contribute to maintenance, transformation, reproduction, activity, or repair.
  1. A pile receives a name.
  2. An organization does something with its parts.
4. **Successor-structured** means the current organization supports differentiated continuations.
  1. Its present configuration matters to what can follow from it.
5. **Nonredundant** means that analysis at this scale identifies continuation relations that are not adequately represented by treating the other loci in isolation.

This last part is especially important for the Problem of Space.

Nonredundancy does **not** mean metaphysical irreducibility.

It does not require a mysterious new force to appear at the higher scale. It does not mean a complete microphysical description somehow becomes false. It's all still down there.

It means the proposed grain of analysis tracks an organized transition, vulnerability, dependency, or repair relation that an inventory of separated parts would fail to represent cleanly.

That is exactly the kind of distinction an emergent-spacetime picture forces us to take seriously.

A macroscopic organization can be physically realized by deeper constituents without becoming fake at the macroscopic scale.

The question is whether the organization has an integrated history and characteristic successors.

Consider a friendship.

> **Where the hell is it?**

**Point to it.**

**Right now.**

You can point to the people.

You can point to messages.

You can point to rooms they occupied together.

You can point to photographs, gifts, scars, shared property, calendar entries, and perhaps an increasingly alarming pile of screenshots.

None of those, alone, is ***the relation***.

The relation can still matter enormously to each person's continuation-generating structure.

Trust can be destroyed. Communication routes can close. Shared plans can disappear. Support can become unavailable. Repair can become easier or harder.

The newer locus account makes us more careful than the old version of this example.

A friendship is not automatically **another moral patient** just because it matters. It may function as an enabling relation inside the continuation-generating structure of the people involved.

In some cases a durable collective organization may itself satisfy the locus diagnostic.

That has to be shown.

The label does not supply the bearer.

This is the same discipline the paper applies to ecosystems, institutions, languages, artifacts, and other non-person organizations.

**Locushood** is a descriptive claim about integrated continuance at a declared grain.

It is not personhood.

It is not equal moral standing.

It is not a right to preservation.

It is *definitely* not jurisdiction over other loci.

The word **locus** therefore survives.

Its ordinary spatial ancestry has been placed under much heavier supervision.

A **locus** is not where something sits.

It is an integrated bearer whose present organization nonredundantly structures what can follow.

> **LOCUS: ALIVE.**

---

## Path-Without-Motion.

Now we reach the most suspicious word in the name of the framework.

> **Path.**

This is some serious shit right here.

- Modal **Path** Ethics.

> Uh oh.

A **path** is the thing you walk on.

A **path** crosses **space**.

A **path** has a beginning, an end, a shape, maybe a sign that has been shot while attempting to explain that bicycles should yield to pedestrians.

If fundamental space disappears, perhaps I have named this entire theory after a goddamned Slip 'n Slide.

Fortunately, no.

A **path** in Modal Path Ethics is an ordered sequence of transitions through which an extant configuration can continue.

Nothing has to travel through physical space.

- A legal case can move from open appeal to final judgment.
- A relationship can pass from trust through fracture into repair.
- A language can move from broad intergenerational transmission into endangered survival.
- A company can move from useful coordination into dependency and then practical sovereignty.
- A democratic institution can pass from contestability into capture while remaining inside the same stone building.
- An ecosystem can shift among stable regimes without the ecosystem itself “going” anywhere.
- A software system can enter a different operational state while its hardware remains inside one rack.

The *path* is the ordered succession of transformations.

Motion is one physical form that succession can take.

> **The path is transition-order, not travel.**

The newer *Contraction* work adds an important warning here.

- Every actual path excludes alternatives.
  - Turning east leaves west unactualized.
  - Learning one profession can close the time that would have gone into another.
  - A commitment can organize a life around some futures instead of others.
  - Development leaves earlier forms behind.

If every unactualized branch counted as contraction, finite existence would become universal harm.

So Modal Path Ethics now distinguishes **temporal specification** from **contraction**.

- Selection can actualize one route while leaving the wider continuation-generator intact.
- Stabilization can close unstable branches while preserving what the bearer requires.
- Commitment can trade superficial optionality for depth, skill, trust, or identity.
- Protective pruning can close destructive continuations.

The question for contraction analysis is never just:

> Which branches disappeared?

It is:

> What happened to the bearer's organized capacity for structurally significant continuation?

That distinction belongs inside the word ***path*** now.

History matters because the current field arrived through prior transitions, and those transitions changed what later transitions became reachable.

- Trust built yesterday changes what can be asked tomorrow.
- Debt accumulated yesterday changes what can be afforded tomorrow.
- A destroyed archive changes what can be known tomorrow.
- A legal precedent changes what can be argued tomorrow.
- A species extinction changes what ecological continuation can occur tomorrow.

**Path-dependence** was always the important property.

The line on the map was the teaching aid.

> **PATH: ALIVE.**

Modal Path Ethics may continue using its tongue-twister name.

---

## Reachability-Without-Distance.

Reachability appears super spatial too.

The cup is ***reachable*** because it is near my hand.

The mountain is not ***reachable*** before lunch because I have made several very serious planning errors this week.

A distant galaxy is currently ***unreachable*** because physics has rules and appears determined to enforce them.

That ordinary meaning helps.

Then Modal Path Ethics exceeds it.

The current definition is stronger:

> **Reachability is field-relative and bearer-relative. A continuation is reachable when the present field supports a viable sequence of transitions connecting the bearer to it under the conditions that actually obtain.**

That support does not have to come from the bearer alone.

Children depend on caregivers.

Patients depend on clinicians, transport, records, pharmacies, equipment, money, and other people.

A disabled person's continuation-generating structure can include assistive technology, accessible infrastructure, practiced routines, social relations, and public institutions.

An ecosystem depends on relations among organisms, climate, soil, water, migration, disturbance, and neighboring systems.

External support does not become unreal support because it crosses an organizational boundary.

The same destination can therefore be reachable for one locus and unreachable for another.

The same public rule can leave one person with an ordinary path and another with a path that exists only on paper.

And an imagined rescue is not yet a route. A future does not become reachable because an analyst can invent a heroic intervention after the fact. The support has to exist, or itself be reachable, under the field that actually obtains.

This makes several old examples cleaner.

- A person can stand directly outside a courthouse while the legal future they need has become unreachable because a filing period expired.
- A medicine can be physically present inside the same hospital while remaining unreachable to the patient because authorization, cost, information, timing, or procedure blocks the transition.
- Two computers can sit on opposite sides of the planet and be functionally adjacent through a network.
- Two departments can occupy neighboring offices and remain institutionally separated by a procedure that makes information transfer almost impossible.
- A worker can be physically near an executive and structurally distant from the decision.
- A person can live within five miles of a university and inhabit a field in which enrollment remains practically unreachable.

Geography matters whenever geography constrains transition.

The moral category is wider.

> **Reachability is viable transition-access from this bearer, in this field, under these conditions.**

Meaning:

> **Reachability is not nearness.**

The same cleanup applies immediately to contraction.

---

## Contraction-Without-Shrinking.

- A **harmed** person does not have to become physically smaller.
- An injured institution does not have to lose square footage.
- An ecosystem can retain the same mapped acreage while losing species, redundancy, resilience, migration corridors, soil health, genetic diversity, and viable recovery paths.
- A company can own the same buildings after its knowledge base becomes brittle.
- A family can occupy the same house after trust collapses.
- A political jurisdiction can retain the same border after meaningful opposition becomes dangerous.

Visible geometry can remain nearly unchanged while organized continuation degrades.

> **A component-relative contraction occurs when an actual transition nontrivially degrades a continuation class or enabling component of a locus's reachable-continuation profile at the declared grain of analysis.**

The profile includes

- the locus's continuation-generating structure,
  - the continuation classes available through it,
    - the resistance attached to those paths,
      - and their structural weight.

Three modes matter:

### Foreclosure.

A continuation that was genuinely reachable is removed.

The important word is **genuinely**.

A fantasy branch was never lost.

A route supported only by an intervention nobody could actually access was never part of the bearer's present reachability.

And closing one redundant route differs from closing the only route carrying a structurally central continuation.

### Resistance thickening.

The continuation remains reachable while access becomes harder, more dangerous, more fragile, more humiliating, slower, more dependent, or more corrective-labor intensive.

A right can survive in law while the path required to exercise it becomes practically unusable.

A business can remain open while customer access collapses.

A language can retain speakers while transmission requires exceptional effort.

A patient can remain “eligible” while every ordinary route to treatment breaks.

Reachability can deteriorate before final foreclosure.

### Generative damage.

The transition weakens a capacity or relation that supports whole families of continuation.

Destroy a record system and many later corrections become harder.

Destroy reproductive structure and a lineage can lose future continuations before the last organism disappears.

Destroy trust and an institution may retain formal authority while losing the relation through which people can safely tell it what is wrong.

Destroy a migration corridor and an ecosystem may remain mapped while the generator of future ecological continuity has been cut.

This is the deepest reason **contraction** never meant shrinkage.

That word names damage to organized continuability.

And now the normative bridge can be stated explicitly:

> **An actual transition harms an extant locus insofar as it nontrivially degrades a structurally significant continuation or enabling structure genuinely reachable from that locus.**

That is the current harm thesis. It adds three constraints the older website shorthand did not state sharply enough.

- First, **not every lost option is harm**.

Specification is not contraction.

- Second, **not every contraction settles the whole moral verdict**.

A defensive firebreak can damage local vegetation while preventing a larger fire. An evacuation can restrict movement while protecting life.

A transition can contain a real harm-token and still be justified, required, or the least-closing available path.

- Third, **the harm belongs to a bearer in a respect**.

A **harm-token** is one qualifying contraction borne by one locus in one respect.

The complete transition profile can include openings, contractions, repairs, resistance changes, and burden transfers across many loci.

The overall verdict comes later.

This is much cleaner than asking whether the transition, considered as one giant object, was simply **good** or **bad**.

So:

- **Contraction is not shrinkage.**

Also:

  - **Specification is not contraction.**

And:

    - **Harm is not the overall verdict.**

> **CONTRACTION: ALIVE.**

---

## Boundary-Without-Wall.

The *boundary* may be the easiest case once we stop drawing it.

Modal Path Ethics already deals constantly in boundaries no cartographer could trace.

- Jurisdiction.
- Membership.
- [Authority.](https://modalpathethics.com/applied-case-the-thin-mint-heist/)
- Procedure.
- Permission.
- Information access.
- Role.
- Responsibility.
- Institutional mandate.
- A corporation's accounting boundary.
- A model's context window.
- A laboratory's observational partition.
- A legal distinction between inside and outside a protected class.

A **boundary** in this sense marks a change in which relations, transformations, permissions, burdens, observations, or corrective routes apply.

Sometimes there is also a fence.

[The fence should not become metaphysically overconfident.](https://modalpathethics.com/australia-vs-the-biosphere-the-rabbit-fence/)

The earlier clock experiment made this especially vivid. [A Bose-Einstein condensate](https://modalpathethics.com/transition-action-the-clock-becomes-an-entropy-leak/) was divided into sectors, and an internal ordering variable could be defined through exchange across that partition.

The experiment did not prove that the universe itself literally works this way. It showed something more modest and extremely useful:

> What becomes legible inside a description can depend on the boundary through which the description is constructed.

The boundary does work.

It decides what counts as system and environment.

Observed and unobserved.

Inside and outside.

Available and hidden.

Retained and discarded.

The new locus work adds another requirement.

> **Drawing the boundary does not create the locus.**

A circle around a collection does not prove that the collection has a diachronically integrated successor structure.

A name does not establish nonredundancy.

The boundary is something to investigate.

So:

> **A boundary marks a change in relational conditions across an analytical or operative cut.**

- A wall can instantiate a boundary.
- A boundary does not owe us a wall.

> **BOUNDARY: ALIVE.**

---

## Relation-Before-Location.

We can now see exactly what happened here.

- Modal Path Ethics used spatial language because spatial cognition supplies an **excellent** interface for structural reasoning.
  - **The framework underneath that interface was already relational.**

The new *Contraction* and locus work has made the stack much harder to accidentally turn into geometry.

Strip all the metaphors down and we now have this:

- **Extance** is realized, causally operative structure.
- An **extant field-slice** is reality as presently active, historically arrived, and capable of further lawful transition.
- A **field** is the structured domain of relations, constraints, capacities, and transitions being tracked in an analysis.
- An **extant locus** is a diachronically integrated causal organization with a nonredundant successor structure at the relevant grain.
- A **continuation** is a path-region or family of downstream configurations available to that locus from its present condition.
- A **continuation-generating structure** is the causally operative organization through which the locus generates, sustains, accesses, or reopens continuations.
- A **path** is an ordered sequence of transitions.
- **Reachability** is field-relative and bearer-relative viable access through the conditions that actually obtain.
- **Resistance** is the work, cost, danger, delay, humiliation, dependency, instability, corrective labor, fragility, and related burden attached to reaching or sustaining a continuation.
- **Component-relative contraction** is nontrivial degradation of a continuation class or enabling component at the declared grain.
- A **harm-token** is a qualifying contraction borne by a particular locus in a particular respect.
- **Repair** reopens, restores, stabilizes, or rebuilds continuation after damage without pretending the earlier contraction never happened.

There is another sentence from the recent work worth carrying directly into this article:

> **The profile is an instrument, not the locus.**

Any analysis of reachable continuation is a representation.

It can miss a support relation.

It can mistake one route for the only route.

It can treat a substitute as usable when the bearer cannot actually use it.

It can choose the wrong grain.

It can draw a boundary where no integrated organization exists.

The field remains capable of correcting the instrument.

That is part of why this framework survives the disappearance of fundamental spatial coordinates.

It never needed its map to become the territory.

Nothing in the current stack requires fundamental spatial location.

That does not make space ethically irrelevant.

Quite the opposite.

If spatial organization emerges at the scale where bodies, ecosystems, cities, armies, roads, homes, datacenters, food systems, hospitals, coastlines, and civilizations actually operate, then spatial facts belong to extance at that scale.

> **Emergence is not unreality.**

- A hurricane does not become fake because no hurricane appears in the Standard Model particle table.
- The local hospital does not disappear because quantum gravity contains no elementary field called **EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT**.
- A national border can organize millions of lives without being a primitive property of the cosmos.
  - A person can be a real locus without being fundamental.
  - An ecosystem can be a real locus without being fundamental.
  - An institution can be a real locus without being fundamental.

Recent work on causal emergence sharpened exactly this point for Modal Path Ethics: a macroscale description can be explanatory without claiming a new metaphysical substance. Nonredundancy asks what organized transition, vulnerability, or repair relation the higher-level description captures that treating the constituent loci separately would miss.

That is enough.

A field can be real without being fundamental.

A locus can be real without being spatially primitive.

This is where Group Field Theory becomes incredibly interesting as a neighboring physical picture.

The research program entertains the possibility that localization itself is reconstructed relationally at an emergent level.

Modal Path Ethics does not need to borrow the ontology.

It can learn from the shape of the possibility.

> **Location can belong to a field without being the condition for there being a field.**

That sentence survives regardless of whether Group Field Theory eventually does.

---

## Locality Has Been Severely Injured.

We have, however, found one casualty.

A small one.

Tiny.

The word **local** has been allowed to wander around Modal Path Ethics with insufficient supervision.

This is understandable.

It is also ***over***.

**“Local”** can mean too many different things:

- spatially local;
- causally local;
- institutionally local;
- computationally local;
- jurisdictionally local;
- relationally local;
- field-local;
- component-local;
- local to a particular locus at a declared grain.

Those are not interchangeable.

- Two events can be spatially distant and causally close.
- Two offices can be spatially adjacent and institutionally distant.
- An effect can be computationally local while producing globally distributed consequences.
- A political decision can be jurisdictionally local while altering supply chains on another continent.
- A family conflict can be relationally local while involving persons moving constantly through wider social fields.

The newer harm work helps here too.

So instead of casually saying **local harm** whenever one really means **“harm to one part of the analysis,”** use the more exact relation:

> **a component-relative harm-token borne by a declared locus in a declared respect.**

That tells us where the harm sits in the analysis without pretending it occupies a small physical region.

So locality survives with an annotation requirement.

When the distinction matters, say what kind.

The same warning applies to **distance**.

Distance between what, under which relation? Meters? Communication steps? Institutional permissions? Corrective cost? Causal intermediaries? Time to intervention? Dependency layers? Social trust? Resistance?

A theory of relations becomes stronger when it stops allowing one geometry to impersonate all of them.

> **LOCALITY: OFFICIALLY MINOR INJURY.**

> **RETURNED TO DUTY WITH RESTRICTIONS.**

---

## Do Not Give Group Field Theory a Throne.

This is the dangerous point.

We have just encountered a serious physical research program whose conceptual vocabulary suddenly looks **extremely** friendly.

- *Pre-geometric structure.*
- *Emergent spacetime.*
- *Relational localization.*
- *Collective phases.*
- *Path-dependent generation.*
- *A deep description from which familiar structure appears only at another level.*

There is a very old philosophical temptation here.

- Find the physics that resembles your metaphysics.
- Move in immediately.
  - Begin hanging pictures.
    - Announce that the scientists have confirmed what you were saying all along.

Modal Path Ethics has already done this audit.

[*Wolfram and the Moral Field*](https://modalpathethics.com/wolfram-and-the-moral-field/) addressed a similarly attractive neighboring picture. Wolfram's computational universe offers rules, generated structures, causal dependencies, path-dependence, and local updates producing global complexity.

- The overlap is real.
- The dependency is thinner.

The same is true here.

Modal Path Ethics needs actual bearers with structured continuations, fields in which those continuations become more or less reachable, and transitions capable of degrading or preserving the structures through which continuation proceeds.

It does not require Group Field Theory.

It does not require spacetime to be emergent.

It does not require spacetime to be fundamental.

And the locus diagnostic now makes that independence clearer than the older version of this article could before I edited it last night, my God, I am so tired.

A **locus** does not have to be metaphysically irreducible.

Its scale has to earn its place by tracking integrated, nonredundant successor structure.

That is a claim about explanatory and causal organization at the grain of analysis.

Not a treaty with one theory of quantum gravity.

Marco Forgione's 2024 paper [***“Group field theories: decoupling spacetime emergence from the ontology of non-spatiotemporal entities”***](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13194-024-00585-6?ref=modalpathethics.com) is useful here precisely because it separates questions that are very easy to collapse: how spacetime emerges and what the underlying non-spatiotemporal entities ultimately are.

One can investigate effective emergence without pretending the fundamental ontology has already been completely interpreted.

Modal Path Ethics should practice the same discipline.

No alliance requires coronation.

- If Group Field Theory succeeds spectacularly, excellent.

Modal Path Ethics gains a powerful physical example of familiar spacetime emerging from more basic non-spatiotemporal structure.

- If Group Field Theory fails, fine.

The framework keeps every conceptual correction recovered in this article.

If another approach to quantum gravity replaces it with a radically different ontology, send that one over too.

**I am not afraid of any of you.**

> **A theory that survives a physical model does not owe the model a crown.**

Group Field Theory can stay.

Just not on the throne.

## Casualty Report.

We can now complete the inspection.

- **FIELD**
  - Alive.

Now explicitly separated from spatial container language. The field is a structured analytical domain inside an extant field-slice, and a field is not automatically itself a bearer.

- **LOCUS**
  - Alive.

Much healthier, actually.

An extant locus is a diachronically integrated causal organization with nonredundant successor structure at the relevant grain.

Coordinates are irrelevant to the definition.

A name or analytical circle is insufficient.

- **PATH**
  - Alive.

A path is ordered transition.

Physical travel is one possible case.

Selecting one path also does not automatically contract the others. Temporal specification has been separated from harm.

- **REACHABILITY**
  - Alive.

Now explicitly field-relative and bearer-relative.

Reachability is viable supported transition-access under conditions that actually obtain.

Physical nearness proves almost nothing by itself.

- **CONTRACTION**
  - Alive.

No longer permitted to impersonate “any option disappeared.”

Contraction requires nontrivial degradation of a continuation class or enabling component of a locus's reachable-continuation profile.

Foreclosure, resistance thickening, and generative damage remain the three central modes.

- **HARM**
  - Alive.

Under heavier evidentiary requirements.

A qualifying contraction constitutes a pro tanto harm-token to the bearer in that respect.

That does not settle blame, justification, rights, priority, or the overall verdict.

- **BOUNDARY**
  - Alive.

A boundary marks a change in relational conditions across an analytical or operative cut.

Walls remain optional.

Drawing the cut does not prove the locus.

- **EXTANCE**
  - Alive.

Actual causally operative structure never required a universal spatial background.

- **FUTURE**
  - Still alive after the previous incident.

A future remains a reachable continuation, now stated more exactly as a continuation available to a bearer from an extant field under actual support and resistance.

- **LOCALITY**
  - Wounded.

Now required to identify which relation makes something local.

- **FUNDAMENTAL BACKGROUND SPACE**
  - No record that this was ever a member of the framework.

Who the hell invited this one?

> **No losses.**

The vocabulary returns cleaner than it left.

## The Ruling.

Group Field Theory may be wrong.

That is fine.

The point of this exercise was never to recruit a candidate theory of quantum gravity into moral philosophy. It was to ask whether Modal Path Ethics had hidden an unnecessary spatial ontology inside its own language.

The answer is:

- *yes*,
  - *woops*,
    - *lightly*,
      - at the level of metaphor;
- **and no,**
  - at the level that matters.

Fields do not need to be rooms.

Loci do not need to be points.

Paths do not need to be trajectories through space.

Reachability does not need to be proximity.

Contraction does not need to be geometric reduction.

Boundaries do not need to be walls.

And the newest work adds a stronger set of refusals.

A **locus** cannot be manufactured by drawing a boundary.

A **future** cannot be made reachable by imagining a rescue.

A **harm** cannot be manufactured from every unchosen branch.

A **contraction** cannot be inferred from change alone.

A **higher-level bearer** does not have to be metaphysically fundamental.

A **harm-token** does not settle the overall moral verdict.

The framework requires something thinner and more durable:

> **Modal Path Ethics requires extant causal organization in which bearers possess structured continuations, relations constrain which continuations are genuinely reachable, and actual transitions can preserve, burden, damage, foreclose, or reopen those continuations.**

And the central harm claim now sits inside that structure:

> **An actual transition harms an extant locus insofar as it nontrivially degrades a structurally significant continuation or enabling structure genuinely reachable from that locus.**

- If physical space is fundamental,
  - Modal Path Ethics operates inside it.
- If physical space is emergent,
  - Modal Path Ethics operates at the emergent scales where spatial relations become causally operative.
- If localization itself is relationally reconstructed from deeper structure,
  - Modal Path Ethics remains concerned with the relations through which actual bearers acquire, sustain, lose, and repair reachable continuation.

The physical account changes what the field is made from.

It changes which relations are fundamental and which emerge.

It can change what kinds of action, distance, persistence, causation, repair, and continuation are physically possible.

Those discoveries matter enormously.

They do not erase organized continuability once it appears.

A protoplanetary disk does not qualify as a locus because a telescope can circle a region around it. It qualifies, if it does, because material and orbital relations form an integrated history with characteristic successors, and stripping those relations can damage the generator through which planet-forming continuations remain reachable.

A person does not qualify because they occupy coordinates.

An institution does not qualify because it owns a building.

An ecosystem does not qualify because someone drew a conservation boundary around a map.

- The bearer is the organization.
  - The map is an instrument.

The location is one relation among others.

Physics removed the clock.

Modal Path Ethics kept continuation.

Physics has now threatened to remove the room.

Fine. You can't stop me.

The room was never carrying the theory.

The relations are still there.

The bearers are still there.

The transitions are still happening.

And once the future is neither a date nor a place, one last intuition remains to audit:

> **the future has to mean something new.**
