# The Categories Cannot Hold

Hanno Sauer has built an island.

In *The End of History*, he asks us to imagine a small population cut off from most of modern intellectual life. The islanders have little contemporary science, mathematics, technology, or access to the accumulated information available elsewhere. Many never encounter one another. Their theories develop under severe informational constraints.

Then imagine the rest of the world becoming obsessed with them.

Their hardest books receive departments. Their strangest claims receive conferences. Scholars spend careers reconstructing exactly what one islander meant by another islander. When someone points out that billions of better-informed people now live outside the island, defenders explain that the islanders were simply unusually brilliant.

Sauer reveals the joke.

- The island is the history of philosophy.

This is a good argument.

That is unfortunate, because [Modal Path Ethics has spent **quite** a lot of of its valuable time this year reading dead-ass philosophers.](https://modalpathethics.com/tag/engagement/)

Sauer’s target is narrower than a ban on intellectual history. He grants the historical, literary, cultural, and humanistic value of studying old philosophy. His objection concerns **philosophy as inquiry**. If the question is what knowledge is, how the mind works, what constitutes a just society, where linguistic meaning comes from, or what natural laws are, **why should a thinker working without modern science, contemporary arguments, later evidence, or the accumulated corrections of intervening centuries receive unusual epistemic weight?**

He then presses harder.

Many familiar defenses of philosophical history identify benefits that history does not uniquely provide. Difficult old books can train careful reading. Cool. Other difficult books exist. Historical systems can expose alien assumptions. Badass. Other cultures, disciplines, contemporary dissidents, literature, science, and unfamiliar intellectual traditions can do that too. 

Sauer also argues that vastly more potential philosophical talent exists among **the living population** than among the comparatively tiny populations from which the familiar canon was selected, while contemporary thinkers possess a much larger informational field.

**Ancestry** is weak evidence.

**Prestige** is weak evidence.

A **famous dead person** does not acquire permanent jurisdiction over a question by having encountered it first in causal sequence.

If Aristotle is wrong, then that means *Aristotle is wrong*.

Let the old corpse-philosopher lose.

Then, Sauer reaches the edge of his island and notices something is *moving* underneath it.

Near the end of the paper, he acknowledges that his argument assumes a particular picture of ***philosophy***: a reasonably stable set of philosophical problems persists while successive generations develop better answers. He grants the historicist objection that what counts as a philosophical problem, and why certain problems appear on the agenda at all, can itself have a history. 

Sauer answers that some questions like free will, knowledge, moral responsibility, God, mind and body, individual and society remain sufficiently continuous for his argument to retain force.

Fair answer.

So now we need to find the shoreline.

## **Where the *Fuck* Is Philosophy?**

Take one of Sauer’s own examples:

- **How does the human mind work?**

> ***Which department owns that question?***

> Philosophy?

> Psychology?

> Neuroscience?

> Cognitive science?

> Computer science?

> Linguistics?

> Artificial intelligence?

> Medicine?

> Anthropology?

The question does not become meaningless because several instruments reach it. 

The opposite happens. 

Each discipline creates **a different selecting cut through the same enormous field**.

Ask what *knowledge* is and the border leaks again.

Epistemology enters psychology, perception research, statistics, scientific methodology, law, journalism, information theory, machine learning, history, and sociology.

Ask *what constitutes a just society* and political philosophy immediately begins exchanging material with economics, law, sociology, history, political science, public administration, game theory, ecology, and the institutions currently forcing actual people to live inside actual answers.

Ask *where linguistic meaning comes from* and philosophy finds linguistics is already standing in the room.

Sauer’s island has a ***problem***.

We can identify something called *philosophy* institutionally. There are all kinds of *philosophy departments*, *philosophy journals*, *philosophy conferences*, *philosophy degrees*, recognizable methods, inherited arguments, technical vocabularies, and professional communities.

That category is real enough to organize work.

It becomes **much** harder to defend as the natural border of the inquiry itself.

Successful inquiry can actually make this problem even worse.

A question begins as *philosophical* because nobody has a strong enough instrument for contacting it.

Then, somebody builds one.

- Observation improves.
- Measurement becomes possible.
  - A formalism stabilizes.
  - An experiment can discriminate among claims.
    - A technical practice forms.
    - A professional community grows around the instrument.

Eventually part of the old philosophical question acquires another institutional address. The question did not leave reality. The filing cabinet changed.

This creates a strange selection effect.

Philosophy can lose pieces of its territory precisely when **inquiry succeeds well enough** for those pieces to become specialized elsewhere. What remains inside *philosophy* becomes disproportionately populated by questions that resist clean measurement, questions whose terms remain unstable, questions crossing several descriptive levels, and questions concerning the legitimacy of the instruments everybody else is already using.

Then, philosophy looks over at physics and asks why the fuck physics has so many settled answers.

***Physics*** has been **keeping the equipment.**

Philosophy, meanwhile, has been keeping a surprising amount of whatever shit spills off the table.

This does not defeat Sauer’s case for paying more attention to contemporary work.

It makes the category in which the case is being conducted absurdly unstable.

The *historical philosopher* and the *contemporary philosopher* are not simply two populations working on one stationary island at different moments.

The island itself has been breaking apart, building bridges, losing territory, gaining strange new coastlines, and occasionally discovering that something everyone called a *philosophical question* is now wearing a nice crisp lab coat two buildings over.

The category cannot hold the field.

## **This Problem Is So Much Larger Than Philosophy.**

Human beings need categories.

[We cannot act at infinite resolution.](https://modalpathethics.com/applied-case-fresh/)

A hospital needs to distinguish one kind of problem from another. A legal system needs statuses. A university needs departments. A census needs boxes. A database needs fields. A language needs nouns. A city government needs to know whether something is a residence, business, road, utility, park, vehicle, person, hazard, tax parcel, or somebody else’s problem.

A category **compresses**. That is the job.

- It makes some differences vivid enough for action.
- It also pushes other differences into the background.

Modal Path Ethics has already dealt with the philosophical danger here. In [*Kant and the Corrigible Field*](https://modalpathethics.com/kant-and-the-corrigible-field/), the framework submitted its own vocabulary to the same audit. Extance, locus, reachability, resistance, and field do not receive diplomatic immunity because Modal Path Ethics invented these ones in a manic frenzy.

A contact instrument has to declare its domain, expose its selecting cut, preserve an evidence path, permit counter-instruments, and remain corrigible by whatever it claims to contact. Different instruments can carry different cuts through the same extant structure without any one description becoming the final inventory of reality.

So we already know better than to answer leaky categories with the Perfect Nouns.

Kant took that toy away, sadly.

The new problem is what happens after the category starts leaking.

Consider one *human being*.

- A physician encounters a **patient**.
- A court encounters a **legal person**.
- An employer encounters a **worker**.
- A bank encounters an **account holder**.
- A government encounters a **citizen**.
- A platform encounters a **user**.
- An insurer encounters a **risk profile**.
- A family encounters **someone they love**.

The person can move through all of these descriptions before arriving at lunch.

- Each category reveals something.
- Each can become important.
- Each can carry obligations and protections the others cannot.
  - None exhausts the locus.

And if the person is injured at 9:00 a.m., the injury does not disappear because the 11:00 a.m. institution has assigned a different category.

- The classification changed.
  - The transition did not unhappen.

That is the opening.

## **What Survives Translation?**

A theory of categories becomes interesting when descriptions disagree.

One institution says:

- **Patient.**

Another says:

- **Employee.**

Another says:

- **Claimant.**

Another says:

- **Expense.**

Another says:

- **Defendant.**

Another says:

- **Daughter.**

> What survives all six cuts?

The answer cannot simply be another noun placed above them.

We can ask instead what keeps answering across descriptions.

- A body was injured.
  - A history now contains that injury.
    - Some later actions became harder.
    - Some obligations appeared.
    - Some resources became more important.
    - Some people acquired power over the next transition.
    - Some records preserved what happened.
      - Some records failed to.
    - Some descriptions made repair easier.
      - Some made the injury administratively disappear.

The *categories* can fight for jurisdiction while the **consequences** continue unbothered through all of them.

This is close to the thin realist floor Modal Path Ethics defended against Kant: *actual histories constrain later transitions*; *interventions can preserve, burden, redirect, or foreclose continuance*; and *the effects of an intervention exceed the description under which the intervention was authorized*.

That is what seems to hold better.

Not the perfect description. 

The structure that keeps surviving *redescription*.

- A category earns confidence when different routes into the field continue finding something compatible with the distinction it makes.
- It loses confidence when maintaining the category requires throwing away more and more of what other instruments keep encountering.

This gives us a useful test. When a boundary becomes contested, ask:

- What distinction was the category built to preserve?
- What had to be pushed outside the frame for the category to work?
- What keeps crossing the boundary anyway?
- What consequences remain after the object has been redescribed?
- Which repair paths become unreachable if the category is defended as final?

The border has to surrender when the field stops honoring it.

## **Samsara Was Already Leaking.**

Buddhism brought Modal Path Ethics to this problem by another route.

In *Samsara & Repair*, the framework encountered dependent origination and no-self: the apparently stable self resolves under inspection into bodily processes, perceptions, memories, habits, dispositions, relations, and conditions. Modal Path Ethics did not answer by trying to replace that picture with a harder metaphysical person-object. It just conceded the pressure and stayed inside extance: actual continuation through inherited conditions, damage, burden, repair, and the paths still reachable from here.

The noun loosens. The history remains. 

The person is composite. The wound still happened to someone.

The field does not require an eternal essence before it can carry damage.

This matters far beyond Buddhist metaphysics.

Human categories often become most aggressive precisely when the object underneath them is dynamic.

We want to know what something ***is***.

Except the field keeps answering with *what it is becoming*, *what formed it*, *what acts through it*, *what it depends on*, *what it affects*, and *what happens next*.

The **noun** is trying to hold a *process*.

Sometimes, it does a respectable job at this.

The Second Battle of Hoover Dam begins with everyone arriving with a theory.

- The New California Republic has one.
- Caesar’s Legion has one.
- Mr. House has one.
- The Courier can acquire several.

Everyone has a little story about government, civilization, independence, security, ownership, authority, and the future.

Underneath all of them is 

> concrete.

> Water.

> Turbines.

> Roads.

> Power.

> Supply.

> Bodies.

> A river carrying every theory forward whether the theory has finished explaining itself or not.

The dam forces succession. ***Somebody*** inherits what is already there.

That is our conceptual situation.

We are standing on old concrete.

- **Person.**
- **Worker.**
- **Nation.**
- **Property.**
- **Disease.**
- **Disability.**
- **Religion.**
- **Science.**
- **Philosophy.**
- **Machine.**
- **Author.**
- **Expert.**

Civilization has poured extraordinary amounts of institutional concrete around these distinctions.

Rights depend on them.

Responsibilities depend on them.

Budgets depend on them.

Professional jurisdictions depend on them.

Identity depends on them.

Databases depend on them.

Treaties, insurance policies, court rulings, research programs, schools, prisons, hospitals, companies, borders, and family expectations have all been built against their surfaces.

This is load-bearing infrastructure.

Discovering a leak is not permission to blow up the dam.

Some categories preserve distinctions that people desperately need protected.

Some borders stop a powerful institution from swallowing another jurisdiction.

Some classifications make harm legible.

Some nouns let a person finally name what has been happening to them.

The problem begins when inherited infrastructure points to the fact that it still carries load and concludes that the original blueprint was therefore eternal.

Everyone is standing around pretending the old categories still hold in the old way.

Except the categories are leaking.

## **Artificial Intelligence Finds All Your Cracks.**

Artificial intelligence arrives at an almost comically bad moment for the filing cabinet.

Current systems are advancing across reasoning, coding, multimodal tasks, science, and increasingly complex real-world task execution while their use spreads through institutions faster than governance and evaluation systems are adapting. 

Then the old categories have to receive this thing.

Good fucking luck. These can barely receive *humans*.

Is an artificial intelligence system:

- **software?**

Obviously.

- A **tool?**

Frequently.

- A **worker?**

Well, sometimes the institution is using it to perform work that previously passed through workers.

- An **author?**

- A **search system?**

Sometimes.

- A **reasoning system?**

In some tasks, yes.

- A **tutor?**
- A **programmer?**
- A **research instrument?**
- A **decision-support system?**
- An **agent?**
- An **interface?**
- An **institutional memory?**
- An **oracle?**

Different fields answer differently because they are asking different questions.

- Copyright wants one boundary.
- Employment law wants another.
- Computer science wants another.
- Education wants another.
- Safety engineering wants another.
- This user wants another.
- The company selling the system wants whichever category is having the easiest regulatory afternoon.

The mistake would be to believe that One Victorious Noun will solve the field.

Artificial intelligence is particularly destructive to inherited conceptual borders because the same underlying system can pass through activities that institutions had previously separated by profession, building, credential, software category, and workflow.

A single human-machine interaction can move through historical research, writing, programming, mathematical analysis, translation, design, planning, and criticism without stopping to ask which department owns the next sentence.

The disciplines still matter. Their standards still matter.

A language model generating a medical sentence has not become a physician.

A model producing legal analysis has not acquired a law license.

A model writing code has not inherited every responsibility of a software engineer.

Those distinctions protect real things.

The leak appears somewhere else.

The **capacity** crossed the border even when the **title** did not.

That is the part institutions are having trouble describing.

We keep asking whether the machine **is** something because our systems know how to allocate responsibility through **nouns**.

Except the field keeps presenting verbs.

It writes. 

It predicts.

It searches.

It transforms.

It recommends.

It generates.

It coordinates.

It fails.

It persuades.

It remembers some things.

It loses others.

It changes what the human beside it can reach.

Now the category problem becomes operational.

- If a system performs part of a physician’s work without becoming a physician,  
  - which safeguards were attached to that title and which were attached to the function?
- If a system performs part of an employee’s work without becoming an employee,  
  - where the hell did the bargaining relation go?
- If a model participates heavily in authorship while remaining legally classified as a tool,  
  - which obligations belonged to authorship and which belonged to the human name printed above the result?
- If expertise becomes partially available through systems outside the institutions that historically certified experts,  
  - which protections were preserving epistemic quality and which were just preserving jurisdiction?

These are all different questions.

They cannot be answered by shouting the old category more loudly.

Artificial intelligence did not create these cracks.

It just changed the pressure behind them.

## **Back to Sauer’s Island.**

Now return to Hanno Sauer.

> Should philosophers spend less time reading the history of philosophy?

> Probably.

Modal Path Ethics is willing to let that ruling stand much farther than many philosophers will enjoy.

The canon is not some magic intelligence amplifier. Historical prestige does not convert **obsolete information** into current evidence.

A dead-ass philosopher should be allowed to become wrong, locally useful, historically fascinating, partially absorbed, superseded, or irrelevant to the present question.

Sauer is right to attack the reflex by which ancestry becomes epistemic authority.

Then the deeper problem survives his victory.

> What exactly counts as the present state of philosophy?

- Where is the boundary around the population we are supposed to consult instead?
  - If a neuroscientist advances the mind problem, has philosophy progressed?
  - If a computer scientist changes what can be demonstrated about reasoning, has philosophy progressed?
  - If a legal scholar discovers a structure of institutional authority that political philosophers missed, does the result enter philosophy only after a philosopher cites it?
  - If an artificial intelligence system helps a person move an argument across five disciplines and the useful insight appears in the translation, which field gets the point?

The old island has already become an archipelago.

Sauer wanted to move our attention from the historical island to the better-informed world outside it.

Modal Path Ethics walks outside.

Then it discovers that the fences around the outside world are **also** instruments.

That is the larger lesson.

A category can be accurate enough to work and still fail as a final border.

A discipline can preserve knowledge and still misdescribe the topology of inquiry.

A title can protect a function and still become confused with the function itself.

A noun can point toward stable structure and still begin leaking as the structure changes underneath it.

The task is not to abolish categorization.

Civilization would last about fifteen minutes.

The task is to stop granting the category sovereignty over whatever it was built to help us see.

The categories cannot hold.

They were never supposed to hold everything.

They are cuts through fields made by finite creatures who need enough distinction to think, coordinate, protect, remember, and act.

Some cuts are excellent.

Some are cruel.

Some are obsolete.

Some are still protecting people from exactly the power that would love to dissolve them.

Some have become walls around processes that stopped fitting years ago.

So keep the distinctions that still carry contact.

Preserve the protections attached to them.

Let rival instruments answer.

Watch what survives translation.

Watch what keeps producing consequences after the label changes.

Watch where the same structure appears from another side.

And when the water starts coming through the wall, do not prosecute the water for conceptual misconduct.

Inspect the concrete.
