## I. **Vow of the Disciple**

This is not going to be a very short article.

The other weekend, [*Amor Fati*](https://modalpathethics.com/amor-fati/) attempted to discuss Friedrich Nietzsche loving his fate and somehow ended with Friedrich August Wolf opening Homer, Hans-Georg Gadamer climbing into the window, Georges Bataille refusing the capture, the author of the *Iliad* disappearing, Achilles performing a hostile audit of his own rage, and Modal Path Ethics discovering that provenance could be distributed without becoming absent.

Jacques Derrida has noticed these artifacts. He would like to inspect them.

This is **bad**. Because Modal Path Ethics has spent months building increasingly elaborate distinctions around sources, traces, representations, derivatives, archives, loci, explanations, copies, records, histories, and the things those instruments claim to preserve.

Derrida spent much of his career making very intelligent people regret sentences containing words like **source**.

**But this is not April.**

> Load into the raid.

---

# II. **DISCIPLE’S BOG**

## \>*Gather the Knowledge.*<

Ordinarily, these engagements begin with Modal Path Ethics wandering into somebody else’s intellectual machinery carrying three definitions and a flashlight.

Not today.

I came unusually prepared this time.

- **Wolf** is here.

He already taught us that a source can arrive as a distributed historical field.

- **Gadamer** is here.

He already put the interpreter inside the transmission history.

- **Bataille** is here.

He already gave us **contact without capture**.

- **Levinas** is here.

The represented locus exceeds the instrument trying to finish it.

- **Hoel** is here.

Relations can constitute an object without making the object disappear.

- **Hacking** is here.

A description can enter the field it describes and change what happens next.

- **Simondon** is here.

The supposedly finished object already has a genesis.

- **Hegel** is here.

Historical retention does not restore the continuation that was lost.

- **Roger Ebert** is here in exactly the limited sense Roger Ebert is still allowed to be here.

His archive contains traces of critical encounters. It does not put him back on assignment.

- **The shredded books** are here too.

They have page images. OCR. Normalized text. Chunks. Tokens. Checksums. Destroyed bindings. Missing handwriting. Capture contracts. Destruction ledgers.

And one very angry dinosaur in Las Vegas.

- Then there is **mechanistic provenance**.

> A model produces an explanation.

> The explanation returns to the model.

> The model changes.

The later audit can now be perfectly accurate about the wrong version.

Modal Path Ethics already [built a wall around that one](https://modalpathethics.com/the-explanation-writes-back/).

It even has [its own genealogy](https://modalpathethics.com/modal-path-ethics-tries-to-retire/) now.

[No immaculate conception](https://modalpathethics.com/origins/). No sacred Founder moment.

No isolated mind standing outside history receiving the framework directly from Reality Customer Support.

The payload reaches the Pyramid.

Jacques Derrida is inside.

# III. ACQUISITION

## The Symbol Does Not Contain Its Own Instructions.

The first room is covered in symbols.

A symbol appears.

- **Traveler.**
- **Pyramid.**
- **Witness.**
- **Kill.**
- **Give.**
- **Stop.**

Six people discover with great speed that a symbol does not arrive carrying its entire operational meaning inside itself.

The mark exists inside a system of differences.

Which symbol it is not. Where it appeared. Which room produced it. What stage of the encounter the fireteam occupies. Which other symbols arrived around it.

Whether the person shouting the callout has confused **Black Garden** with **Black Heart** again and is about to kill everyone *again*.

Derrida is comfortable here.

Very comfortable.

One of the recurring targets of his work is the fantasy that meaning can be grounded in a perfectly self-present term whose identity precedes relation.

His account of *différance*, trace, and iterability instead treats identity and repeatability as internally bound up with difference. A mark works because it can be recognized again; that repeatability also lets it leave the singular context in which it first appeared.

Fine. Modal Path Ethics has already spent months doing this to nouns.

**Intelligence** looked like a thing.

Get closer.

> Relations.

**Institution.**

> Relations.

**Diagnosis.**

> Relations plus a selecting instrument.

**Locus.**

> Relations too.

At one point Modal Path Ethics got so enthusiastic about this that nearly the whole ontology dissolved and Erik Hoel had to come retrieve the furniture. The resulting correction was useful: being constituted through relations does not make a higher-order object causally disposable. Different scales can preserve different causal structure.

So Derrida gets the first symbol.

> Meaning is relational.

The sign does not contain a tiny soul. Context matters. Difference matters.

Repetition changes things. Excellent.

Now **call** **the correct symbol**.

Because relational meaning can still be wrong.

- A Guardian can misunderstand the sign.
- A translator can fail.
- A category can distort.
- A scanner can miss.
- A model can hallucinate.
- A historian can mistake resemblance for descent.

The fact that interpretation is mediated does not free interpretation from reality.

The room still answers. Shoot **Kill** when the encounter requires **Give** and the resulting deconstruction will be extremely literal.

> **A distinction does not need an essence in order to constrain action.**

> *Acquisition cleared.*

# IV. THE CARETAKER

## Show Me the Source.

Now we roll out the beautiful clean diagram.

- **BOOK** ↓
- **PAGE IMAGE** ↓
- **OCR** ↓
- **NORMALIZED TEXT** ↓
- **CHUNKS** ↓
- **TOKENS** ↓
- **MODEL INPUT**

Modal Path Ethics has spent an unreasonable amount of time insisting that these are all different objects.

Derrida looks at the top.

- **BOOK.**

> Which book?

The physical copy.

> Was that copy the beginning?

No. It was produced from something.

> Which something?

A production file.

> Before that?

An edited manuscript.

> Before that?

Drafts. Notes. Language. Sources. Editors. Inherited forms. Prior books. A publishing apparatus. A writer whose vocabulary arrived before he did.

Alright. Well.

Maybe the manuscript is the source.

> **Which manuscript?**

- The draft before the sentence changed?
  - The one after?
  - The author's file?
  - The editor's file?
  - The corrected proof?
  - The first printing?
  - The copy with an owner's annotation?
  - The rebound copy whose material history is the exact thing the conservator now wants to study?

We have seen this problem before.

- Wolf went looking for Homer.
  - He found a transmission field.
    - Then Gadamer put Wolf inside the field too.

The source was already carrying history before the historian arrived.

Derrida does not get to surprise us with impurity at the origin.

We no longer require an Origin.

That word was doing too much work.

The stronger rule is relational:

> **Sourcehood belongs to a specified provenance relation.**

This physical copy is the source **for this scan**.

This page image is the immediate source **for this OCR operation**.

This OCR output is the source **for this normalization step**.

The normalized representation becomes source material **for this tokenizer**.

The derivative at one edge can become the source at the next.

Nothing strange happened. It changed roles.

It did not travel backward and become its own ancestor.

The source did not disappear. Its jurisdiction got smaller.

## V. THE CARETAKER, FLOOR TWO

### The Supplement Has Loot.

There is another mistake hiding inside the nice descending diagram.

It makes derivation look like progressive impoverishment.

- **Original**.
  - Then worse copy.
    - Then worse copy.
      - Then worse copy.

Then tokens living in a refrigerator box beneath the freeway.

Except that OCR can do something the physical book cannot do by itself.

> **Search**.

A digital image can travel to a reader on another continent in seconds.

Normalized text can support corpus comparison across thousands of documents.

A scholarly edition can expose variants no ordinary reader would have had simultaneously available.

A transcript can make spoken material accessible to somebody who cannot hear it.

A translation can bring an argument into a language its first author never spoke.

The derivative can lose distinctions while gaining capacities.

This is exactly the kind of problem Derrida's **supplement** makes dangerous for any neat hierarchy between primary and secondary. In *Of Grammatology*, the supposedly secondary supplement repeatedly reveals a dependence or incompleteness inside what was imagined as sufficient in itself; the book even moves explicitly “from the supplement to the source.”

Good. The book-object work survives that.

The mistake was never that derivatives are bad.

That whole investigation depended on useful derivatives.

The problem began when utility became identity.

- Searchable text is excellent for searching text.
- Tokens are excellent for token-based computation.
- A scan is excellent for many kinds of remote inspection.
  - Then somebody says:
    - **Excellent. We have the book.**

No. You have an excellent derivative.

The book article already treats every transformation as producing an object with its own representational contract. Some properties survive, some change, some move into metadata, some disappear from current carriage, and some remain recoverable only while a richer upstream object survives.

Derrida therefore improves the formulation.

> Stop imagining a derivative as a sad copy.

> **A transformation redistributes distinctions and capabilities.**

The result can be better for one inquiry. Worse for another.

Incomparable for a third.

- Ancestry does not answer task fitness.
- Task fitness does not rewrite ancestry.

Caretaker loses another floor.

## VI. THE CARETAKER, FLOOR THREE

### Go Back to the Book.

This sentence appears throughout the provenance work:

> **Go back to the book.**

- The OCR lost handwriting.
  - **Go back to the book.**
- The text stream lost page geometry.
  - **Go back to the book.**
- The page image cannot answer a question about the binding.
  - **Go back to the book.**
- A future scholar asks a question the scanner was never designed to preserve.
  - **Go back to the book.**

Derrida now asks what kind of metaphysical nostalgia has entered the room.

> Are we trying to return to pure presence?

> Do we imagine a sacred source sitting untouched before representation began?

**No.**

That interpretation can die immediately.

“Go back to the book” means something much more operational:

> **Move upstream to a surviving object that still carries distinctions the present derivative no longer carries.**

That object can itself be mediated. It can have history and blind spots.

It can be a derivative relative to some earlier relation.

We are not visiting it because God lives inside the binding.

The downstream representation stopped carrying something the upstream object may still let us inspect.

The book work already gives the practical version. A provenance graph can preserve ancestry and destruction perfectly while remaining unable to restore a destroyed richer source. The graph can tell us where correction used to go. It cannot reopen the object after the route has been closed.

So Derrida earns an important wording patch:

> **Upstream correction does not require an absolute origin.**

That is the staircase.

Keep climbing.

# VII. ASCENT

## The Provenance Is Distributed, Not Absent.

Recent Modal Path Ethics work has become irritatingly full of ancestry problems.

- A philosopher turns out to have a precursor.
  - Then the precursor has a precursor.

A supposedly original insight appears elsewhere through a different research program. Two intellectual paths converge.

A later archive search reveals that an apparently novel formulation had neighbors.

This creates two very tempting stories.

Story one:

- **I invented everything.**

No.

Story two:

- **Therefore nobody invented anything.**

Also no.

Chronology remains chronology.

- A dated text can establish that a formulation existed by a particular date.
- A citation can establish that one document explicitly invoked another.
- Version history can establish which wording existed in which version.
- A surviving file can establish that a particular object existed.
- Resemblance can establish resemblance.
- Convergence can establish convergence.
  - None of those automatically establishes causal descent.

And lack of proof of causal descent does not establish miraculous independence.

This is why the line from *Amor Fati* matters:

> **The provenance is distributed, not absent.**

Derrida can break the fantasy of one sovereign origin without making historical sequence evaporate.

The Pyramid has a staircase even if nobody designed the first step.

# EXHIBITION

There are three relics. And nobody gets to keep one.

This is how Modal Path Ethics should do philosophy now.

A conceptual instrument that works perfectly in one room becomes **extremely** dangerous when somebody carries it through the entire raid and announces that all future doors are now shield doors.

- **Pick up the relic.**
  - ***Do your job.***
    - **Pass it.**

# RELIC ONE: *TRACE*

## What Survives Is Not Necessarily What Continues.

*The Anti-Oblivion Doctrine* began with a very large intuition.

- **Transition leaves structure.**
  - Reality after an event is reality after the event.
  - The world does not become the world in which it never happened.

That remains true.

The dangerous version appears when **trace** quietly becomes **recoverable presence**.

- If an event left consequences, perhaps a sufficiently advanced reader could reconstruct it perfectly.
- If the field changed, perhaps the universe contains a lossless archive.
- If enough trace survived, perhaps the lost locus remains somewhere in principle.

No. We already killed that celestial database elsewhere.

[Roger Ebert](https://modalpathethics.com/openai-is-sponsoring-the-seance/) gives the easy case. His archive contains thousands of traces of encounters between one critic and works he actually experienced.

Those traces can support powerful inference. They can be searched, compared, modeled, clustered, and extended into predictions.

They do not create the missing encounter with a film released after his death.

- The corpus can continue.
- The critical relation that would have produced the new review cannot.

Hegel sharpened the same distinction from another direction.

A larger historical structure can retain the significance of what was negated.

That does not restore the negated locus's lost continuation.

- Patroclus can organize Achilles after Patroclus is dead.
  - Patroclus is still dead.

So let Derrida have trace. Let him make trace strange. Let the present carry absence. Let a mark point toward something that is no longer available as presence.

Modal Path Ethics can state the colder version:

> **An event can remain historically consequential after the event itself becomes unrecoverable.**

- Trace is real.
  - Trace is not resurrection.
    - **Pass the relic.**

# RELIC TWO: *REPRESENTATION*

## Contact Without Capture.

Now Levinas, Gadamer, Bataille, physics, and every badly behaved instrument we have ever studied pile into one room.

The old fantasy says successful knowledge requires getting the representation out of the way.

- Make the instrument transparent.
  - Remove interpretation.
  - Remove the observer.
  - Remove history.
  - Remove mediation.
    - Then the thing can finally appear exactly as it is.

We have already abandoned that dream.

Gadamer showed why historical understanding cannot stand outside its own history.

Bataille gave us the stronger rule:

> **contact without capture.**

- A representation can make real contact without exhausting what it represents.
  - A category can fit.
  - A measurement can be accurate.
  - A graph can expose real organization.
  - A diagnosis can track something.
  - A translator can preserve astonishingly intimate structure.
    - None of those successes grants universal jurisdiction.

[The physics work](https://modalpathethics.com/applied-case-physics-finds-the-empty-altar/) reached the same point without needing French philosophy: the observer can enter the physical relation without becoming reality.

[The schizophrenia graph](https://modalpathethics.com/applied-case-the-category-goes-in-the-brain/) can expose real relations under its atlas, preprocessing choices, thresholds, and cohort definition without turning those selecting cuts into the final ontology of schizophrenia.

- The representation works.
- The representation stays an instrument.

Derrida can make mediation unavoidable.

Fine.

> **Mediation is not the opposite of contact.**

The stronger question is whether the contact preserves a route by which the represented field can still correct the representation.

      - **Pass the relic.**

# RELIC THREE: *WRITEBACK*

## I KNOW, I JUST RAN THE EXPERIMENT.

Now Derrida gets his favorite room.

> The representation enters the thing represented.

Hoel and Hacking already showed us the conceptual structure.

- A classification enters a human field.
  - People respond.
  - Institutions respond.
  - Expectations change.
  - Resources move.

The next observer meets a population partly reorganized by the previous description.

The map has entered the territory and parts of the territory are reading the map.

Artificial intelligence makes this **considerably** [easier to test](https://modalpathethics.com/the-explanation-writes-back/).

- A model produces a report about its own decision process.

Call the original mechanism **A0**.

  - Return the report to the model.

Now we have **A1(R)**.

The report can alter what information becomes salient, which features dominate, and which causal route later computation follows.

Audit **A1(R)**, and the report may now fit beautifully.

That still does not establish that the report faithfully described **A0**.

The question becomes:

> **Faithful to which version?**

This is where Derrida should get to make his dramatic entrance.

> **Your representation has entered the object.**

Modal Path Ethics response:

**YES.**

> The representation has altered the thing it supposedly describes.

**YES.**

> The later object therefore carries the history of the representation.

**YES.**

> The representation can no longer be treated as safely outside the represented field.

**I KNOW. I RAN THE EXPERIMENT.**

And what did that experiment require?

**More provenance.**

- Preserve the pre-writeback target.
- Fork before intervention.
- Track which information entered which branch.
  - Do not infer the earlier mechanism from a later system that has already consumed the explanation.

Once the evidence can participate in constructing its own target, causal order becomes part of the scientific object.

This is the crucial inversion.

- Reflexivity does not abolish provenance.
  - It makes sloppy provenance lethal.

> *Exhibition cleared.*

# THE UPENDED.

Everything so far was warm-up.

> **Fine,** says Derrida.

- You have surrendered pure origins.
- You have surrendered transparent mediation.
- You have surrendered self-sufficient objects.
- You have surrendered passive representation.
- You have surrendered exhaustive context.
- You have surrendered the archive as resurrection.
  - Very sophisticated.
    - Very modern.
      - Very brave.

Now explain why you still think you can say:

> **This distinction existed upstream.**

> **This transformation changed it.**

> **This derivative no longer carries it.**

> **This was the source for that operation.**

> **This is the same locus across those changes.**

  - **This was before.**
    - **This was after.**

Have you simply pushed metaphysical presence down one floor?

Did the giant absolute Source disappear only for Modal Path Ethics to rebuild thousands of tiny absolute sources at every provenance edge?

And there he is.

> **RHULK, DISCIPLE OF THE WITNESS**

> *Damage phase unavailable.*

# RHULK: PHASE ONE

## The Distinction Does Not Need Eternity.

Bring out **TraceLossBench**.

Upstream, two observed source strings are distinguishable.

> **`m²`**

> **`m2`**

Under the tested normalization route, the distinction collapses.

Elsewhere:

- **`±20`**
- **`<20`**
- **`~20`**

enter a tested T5 route as distinguishable expressions and later receive the same tested subword-ID representation.

Those expressions can disagree about reality.

The empirical claim is very small.

- At one declared representation boundary, a distinction was inspectable.
- After a specified transformation, that representation stopped carrying it.

The broader book investigation treats exactly this kind of contraction as a bounded claim about an executable boundary, not as proof that the model misunderstood anything downstream.

Derrida can now tell us that `m²` itself is iterable.

> **Yes.**

It belongs to mathematical, typographic, linguistic, technical, and historical systems.

> **Yes.**

Its identity is available through repeatability across contexts.

> **Yes.**

Its interpretation is not secured for every future reader by divine guarantee.

> **Yes.**

None of that touches the local result.

We do not need:

> **`m²`** differs essentially and eternally from **`m2`** throughout every possible interpretive context.

We need:

- **This instrument could distinguish them here.**
- **This downstream representation could not distinguish them there.**

That claim survives.

- The provenance edge is local.
- The distinction is local.
- The test is local.
  - The consequence can still be enormous.

> **A local distinction does not require eternal identity.**

> *Rhulk's first weak point breaks.*

# RHULK: PHASE TWO

## Context Is Open. The Contract Knows.

Derrida's theory of iterability carries a second problem.

A **mark** has to function outside its first context. That is part of what makes it repeatable.

But if the mark can travel, no originating context can dictate every future use in advance. Derrida's *Signature Event Context* pushes directly against the fantasy of a completely saturable context whose rules could exhaust the later life of a mark.

This sounds devastating for archival capture.

> What context should the scanner preserve?

**All of it?**

Define **all**.

Page? Book? Shelf? Library? Owner? Publisher? Language? Culture? Prior citations? Later citations? Lighting? Material composition? The smell that nobody cared about until the chemistry historian arrived eighty years later?

You cannot pack the universe into the derivative.

Good. The capture contract already assumes this.

A **capture contract** says what the instrument attempted to preserve.

- Searchable text.
- Page imagery.
- Color fidelity.
- Page order.
- Visible annotations.
  - Whatever was actually inside scope.

Then it says what was outside. Binding structure. Paper composition. Embossing. Residue. Pressure. Copy-specific marks. Anything nobody tested.

The rule is explicit: the honesty of the contract matters more than its size.

And when the answer is unavailable?

> **UNKNOWN.**

Not:

- **preserved.**

Not:

- **absent.**

Not:

- **probably irrelevant because nobody noticed it during production.**

**Unknown** is information about the state of our knowledge.

Derrida therefore does not destroy the capture contract. He prevents it from pretending to be a completed context.

Good. It never should have.

> *Rhulk's second weak point breaks.*

# RHULK: PHASE THREE

## Iterability Does Not Grant Standing.

Now give Derrida one of his strongest concepts.

- A mark survives because it can leave home.
- A sentence can function after the speaker leaves.
- Writing can remain readable after the intended recipient is absent.

The mark's repeatability survives changes in context and even the absence of the original sender. Derrida makes that possibility structural to writing rather than an accident that arrives later.

Correct. That is why archives, books, and quotations work. That is why Homer is still doing damage to my month. That is why Roger Ebert can still enter a film discussion through what Roger Ebert actually wrote.

Now stop one step before resurrection.

The mark can continue where the locus cannot.

This is one of the deepest distinctions Modal Path Ethics has strengthened this month. A corpus can preserve a critic's patterns. A model can extend them. A later reader can find a new relation inside them. The trace can enter new contexts Roger Ebert never encountered.

None of that creates the encounter Roger Ebert did not have.

The repeated mark can acquire a new function. It can not acquire the absent locus's first-person standing.

The same rule travels everywhere.

- A constitution can outlive its founders.
  - The founders do not therefore continue authoring every later application.
- A dead philosopher's sentence can enter a new argument.
  - The philosopher does not thereby acquire a new belief.
- A model checkpoint can be copied.
  - The copy does not inherit every causal history of the session from which the checkpoint was taken.
- A book's words can survive.
  - The destroyed copy's annotations do not magically migrate into them.

So:

  - **Iterability preserves usability across altered context.**
    - **It does not automatically preserve standing, history, carriage, or identity.**

And the sharper line:

> **A mark can continue where its locus cannot.**

> *Third weak point.*

# RHULK: PHASE FOUR

## The Source Can Change Without Becoming Nobody.

Rhulk now attacks identity itself.

**Fine.** You insist that one physical book persists.

> ***Which book?***

The page yellowed. The spine cracked. Someone repaired it. Someone wrote in it. A corner tore. The binding changed. The catalog number changed.

> At which exact molecule did this cease being the same source object?

**Good luck.**

[Simondon already prepared Modal Path Ethics for this move](https://modalpathethics.com/simondon-and-the-locus-in-formation/).

The individual should not be treated as a fully constituted thing placed at the beginning of its own explanation. Individuation comes first; the individual is something produced through a history of structuring operations.

And the boundary remains relational. The individual and associated milieu can emerge together while staying distinguishable. Dependence does not require boundary abolition. Modal Path Ethics still has to ask whose continuation changed, what died, what was repaired, and which history ceased continuing.

Hoel gave us the complementary correction. The object can be relationally constituted and still remain causally legible at its own scale. The person does not need an indivisible essence to remain a person.

The institution does not need a secret Institution Particle. The book does not need atomic persistence.

*Identity* in this framework was never perfect property sameness. It is organized continuance strong enough for the relevant history, vulnerability, transition structure, and correction relation to remain attributable to this locus at this grain.

An identity claim can fail. Sometimes the object ends. Sometimes continuity bifurcates. Sometimes replacement becomes a new locus. Sometimes the grain was wrong.

Those are problems to investigate. They are not reasons to treat every persistence judgment as nonsense.

> **The locus does not need to be primitive.**

> **It needs to earn its boundary.**

> *Rhulk's fourth weak point breaks.*

> *Damage phase opens.*

# DAMAGE PHASE.

## Provenance Is Not a Ladder Back to Presence.

This is where the old picture finally dies.

The bad provenance diagram looks like this:

- **ORIGINAL** ↓
- copy ↓
- copy ↓
- copy ↓
- very sad JPEG

Derrida can destroy that right away.

**Let him.** We do not need it. The stronger picture is uglier:

- A historically produced object enters a transformation.
- A derivative appears.
  - The derivative enters another system.
  - It becomes an upstream source for another operation.
    - A reader interprets it.
    - The interpretation changes the reader.
      - The reader writes.
      - The new writing enters an archive.
        - A model learns patterns from the archive.
- A generated description returns to a receptive system.
  - The system changes.
    - A later audit encounters a new version.
- Someone discovers that one supposed ancestor was actually a convergence.
  - Another archive reveals a missing intermediary.
- A source is destroyed.
  - The checksum survives.
    - A later question reaches the checksum
      - and discovers that the correction path ended forty years ago.

That is **provenance**.

No throne. No pure summit. No requirement that every node be self-identical outside all relations.

**Just transformations that actually happened.**

And that gives us the line Derrida earns:

> **Mediation does not erase provenance.**

> **Provenance is the history of mediation.**

> *Rhulk enrages.*

# FINAL STAND.

## Who Provenances the Provenance?

Of course Rhulk is not finished.

Derrida looks at the provenance graph.

- **Very nice.**
  - ***Who drew it?***

Which transformations received edges? Which transformations were ignored? What counted as one node? What counted as the same source? What granularity did the system choose? What metadata became canonical? What did the identifier hide? Which uncertain ancestry was silently simplified into one parent? Which interpretive act became a field in the database? Which reader decided that this was a derivation rather than a convergence? Which archivist decided that two copies were equivalent?

Which software decided that a changed object was still **version 1.4** instead of a new object? Which history did the provenance system itself create by making some relations searchable and others invisible?

And, there we have the last raid mechanic.

> **The provenance graph is an instrument too.**

It does not stand outside the field. Neither does anything else.

So just apply **instrument jurisdiction** one more time.

A provenance record can be versioned, corrected, split, merged, challenged, expanded, and superseded.

A later discovery can show that one node was really several. A presumed causal edge can be downgraded to resemblance. A new archive can reveal another upstream object.

A checksum can establish byte identity without establishing intellectual influence. A citation can prove that one text was referenced without proving which conceptual structure was taken from it.

A timeline can establish sequence without establishing independence. A source can be absent while its descendants remain.

And the provenance record describing **all of this** can itself acquire provenance.

> There is no final external reader.

Fine. That does not produce absence.

It produces one more edge.

This is the final lesson *Amor Fati* brought into the Pyramid before Derrida arrived:

> **The provenance is distributed, not absent.**

# RHULK, DISCIPLE OF THE WITNESS: **DEFEATED**

> **What did Derrida actually destroy?**

> Less than expected.

That is usually a good sign.

- He destroyed any remaining temptation to treat **source** as an absolute metaphysical origin.

Good.

- He destroyed the picture of the derivative as a degraded secondary object whose only interesting property is how much of the Origin it failed to preserve.

Good.

- He destroyed the fantasy that context can be completely sealed around a mark.

Good.

- He destroyed any remaining hope that the provenance graph itself could occupy a God's-eye position outside the history it records.

Also good.

> **What survived?**

**Almost everything we actually use.**

Sources survive. Derivatives survive. Objects survive. Representations survive. Traces survive. Loci survive. Identity survives. Correction survives. Archives survive.

And provenance comes out stronger. Because it no longer has to carry a metaphysics of pure beginning.

A **source** is an upstream object or state relative to a specified provenance relation. It may itself have ancestry.

A **derivative** is an object produced through a transformation of another object. Derivation establishes history. It does not establish inferiority, equivalence, complete carriage, or standing.

A **trace** is present structure related to prior transition. It need not restore the event, locus, encounter, or authority from which it descends.

And **provenance** is the inspectable history of relevant transformations, carriers, versions, derivations, interventions, and corrections by which the present object or claim arrived here.

The last rule is essential:

> **A provenance account is itself an instrument. It does not acquire exhaustive authority over the history it represents.**

That is enough.

Please do not create **Différance-Adjusted Reachability**.

Please do not publish a fourteen-column **Trace Ontology**.

Please do not add a Greek letter.

We just escaped Field Tense Logic.

Behave.

# RAID LOOT.

We entered with four lines.

They all survived.

> **The provenance is distributed, not absent.**

> **Mediation is not the opposite of contact.**

> **Contact without capture.**

> **Upstream correction does not require an absolute origin.**

Derrida adds one.

> **Provenance is the history of mediation. Mediation does not erase provenance.**

That is the Exotic.

# THE UPENDED SOURCE.

We came into the Pyramid looking for the Source.

Derrida upended it.

There was no pristine object sitting above history untouched by language, production, transmission, reading, interpretation, copying, context, relation, or use.

- The book had parents.
- The manuscript had parents.
- The author had parents.
- The concepts had histories.
- The archive had selectors.
- The reader had a horizon.
- The representation could write back.
- The source itself had been individuated.

Fine. Yeah. Then we looked down.

The transformations were still there.

This copy became this scan. This scan produced this OCR output. This normalization collapsed this tested distinction. This source was destroyed on this date. This derivative survived. This report entered this model state. This later state differed. This archive preserved these traces. This simulation did not restore this missing encounter. This interpretation changed what happened afterward. This later discovery corrected this provenance edge.

Nothing had to be pure for any of those transitions to be real.

Nothing had to stand outside history for history to have structure.

Nothing had to exhaust its object for contact to occur.

Derrida can have the Origin.

I just needed the path.

The provenance was distributed.

It was never absent.
