- Description: Friedrich Nietzsche would like us to love our fate.

This is going to be a very short article.

In §276 of ***The Gay Science***, Nietzsche gives the phrase its famous formulation. He wants to learn to see what is necessary in things as beautiful. He wants to stop waging war against what cannot be changed, stop accusing, become a Yes-sayer.

By **Ecce Homo**, the demand has hardened. His formula for greatness is *amor fati*: wanting nothing to have been different, backward or forward, and loving necessity rather than simply enduring it.

Aight.

Modal Path Ethics has very little trouble with the useful part of this.

[***The past is not in the option set***](https://modalpathethics.com/the-past-is-not-in-the-option-set/).

A repair that requires the injury never to have happened is unavailable. A future that spends all its energy demanding another past is not navigating the field it actually inherited.

This became especially clear in [***The Future Does Not Have to Be New***](https://modalpathethics.com/the-future-does-not-have-to-be-new/). Modal Path Ethics does not require novelty. It requires continuability. Within the path, what happened happened. Repair can answer a wound without traveling backward and making the wound false.

Nietzsche gets credit.

> Done.

Unfortunately, Friedrich Nietzsche has begun **smelling people**.

---

## Friedrich Can Smell Your Soul.

Near the end of ***Ecce Homo***, Nietzsche explains this special faculty he possesses.

He has, apparently, extraordinarily sensitive nostrils.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-179.png)

This is not metaphor in any harmless sense.

Nietzsche says his instinct for cleanliness allows him to perceive people physiologically. He can **smell** into the interior of a human soul. Concealed filth, bad blood, character hidden beneath education: his psychological antennae reveal it almost immediately. Elsewhere in the same book, he announces that his genius resides in his nostrils.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-180.png)

This would already be worth a note if Nietzsche had kept his nose inside ***Ecce Homo***.

**He did not.**

Modal Path Ethics has just been through Philipp Mainländer.

[Will Is Not UniversalSchopenhauer, Mainländer, and the Metaphysics of Closure.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/icon/thin-tile.rulebook-2-d761dbc0-dace-4624-955a-0ad33223cf2d.png)Modal Path EthicsAidan Lawson![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/thumbnail/ab774908873f6a78f2fd62c33006a985-1-913bb850-530f-41a3-ac64-16fdf2929bdb.webp)](https://modalpathethics.com/the-will-is-not-universal/)

A few days ago, Mainländer was useful because he found a real problem inside Schopenhauer's universal Will, broke that Will into plurality, and then proceeded to construct one of the most **alarming** metaphysical repair jobs available to nineteenth-century German philosophy.

That article eventually caught him red-handed turning decay into desire.

- Things weaken.
- Things dissipate.
- Things die.
  - None of those facts contains a **want**.

Mainländer took a directional property and gave it an interior.

Nietzsche had **another** method available.

In §357 of *The Gay Science*, while asking whether various pessimists **really** belong to the German tradition, Nietzsche reaches Mainländer. He finds Mainländer mawkish, calls him an **apostle of virginity**, and then speculates that he was ***probably Jewish***, adding an antisemitic generalization to explain the moralizing sentimentality he thinks he has detected.

That is an **extraordinary** inferential route.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-181.png)

Nietzsche has just encountered:

- **a philosophical style.**

From this, he has somehow acquired:

  - **an ancestry.**

Later testimony corrected him. Mainländer was not, it turned out, Jewish. Nietzsche was apparently willing to retract his factual guess when told otherwise.

Good. The nose has received peer review.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-182.png)

The interesting question is how this seemed like **knowledge** in the first place.

How the hell does somebody get from:

> this philosophy has a certain moral texture

to:

> **therefore I know something about the blood of the philosopher?**

We are no longer studying ***amor fati***.

Something has gone terribly wrong.

---

## The Face Was Already Talking.

Nietzsche did not invent the dream that an exterior sign could disclose an invisible interior.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-183.png)

Johann Caspar Lavater had given eighteenth-century physiognomy an enormously ambitious program. The visible surface of the human being was related to invisible content. Body, contour, posture, face, constitution, movement: all might disclose character behind appearance.

Schopenhauer carried the confidence forward with unusual clarity.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-184.png)

For him, the face is a decipherable hieroglyph. The exterior expresses the interior. A face may tell us more than speech because speech can deceive while the body's form carries a deeper natural record. He even thinks first encounters can be especially revealing, before familiarity contaminates the allegedly objective impression.

This is extremely useful background for Nietzsche.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-185.png)

Nietzsche does not simply reproduce Schopenhauer's physiognomy. His mature moral psychology is considerably stranger and more dynamic. Morality itself becomes symptomatic. Evaluations reveal drives. Philosophies reveal philosophers. Moral systems can be read as expressions of bodies, instincts, health, decadence, incorporation, cultivation, type. Contemporary scholarship has accordingly treated Nietzsche's physiological and racial vocabulary as philosophically significant rather than as decorative nineteenth-century debris.

The general movement is recognizable:

- **sign**
  - **→**
    - **interior.**
- **A face**
  - *reveals*
    - **character.**
- **A morality**
  - *reveals*
    - **physiology.**
- **A philosophy**
  - *reveals*
    - **type.**
- **A sentimental argument**
  - *reveals*
    - **Mainländer's supposed ancestry.**

At which point Immanuel Kant fires one extremely well-aimed shot from a nearby hill.

---

## Kant Was On The Grassy Knoll.

Kant considered physiognomy too.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-186.png)

His judgment is inconveniently good.

Humans naturally read faces. We watch expression, appearance, posture, reaction. We form expectations about one another through visible signs.

Kant still says physiognomy **cannot become a science**.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-187.png)

The problem is underdetermination. Blushing, for example, might indicate guilt, embarrassment, honor, accusation, or something else. [The sign does not secure the interior state with the certainty the physiognomist wants](https://modalpathethics.com/moonlight-with-figures-the-ghost-dance/).

Nietzsche has been hit.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-188.png)

- The face can carry information.
- The face does not therefore become transparent.
  - Mainländer's prose can carry information.
  - Mainländer's prose does not therefore become a blood test.

This is exactly where the [existing Modal Path Ethics engagement with Kant](https://modalpathethics.com/kant-and-the-corrigible-field/) landed from another direction. Transparent access was rejected in favor of **corrigible contact**: expose the selecting cut, preserve the evidence path, admit counter-instruments, let affected loci answer, retain error, preserve an exit. No single instrument completes the field.

Now, time to lob a grenade in his direction too. No one is safe.

**Unfortunately, Kant has an anthropology.**

---

## Kant Started Doing It Too.

Once *Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View* moves beyond individual physiognomy, Kant proceeds into **the character of persons, sexes, peoples, races, and the species**.

This is so awkward, Immanuel.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-189.png)

The man who has just warned that the visible individual does not give us a science of the interior begins making extraordinarily large claims about collective character.

And the problem cannot be brushed aside as one bad paragraph from an otherwise pristine critical machine. Scholarship on Kant's anthropology has traced the way national character, racialized inheritance, blood, passion, civilization, and political capacity become entangled in his descriptions of peoples.

- There remains serious scholarly disagreement over how these materials relate to the rest of Kant's philosophy and over changes in his views, including his later anti-colonial legal thought.
- The anthropological classifications themselves are right there.

So Kant's little sniper position has become compromised.

He had correctly noticed:

> the surface does not entitle you to the whole interior.

Then the unit became **a people**.

Apparently, the scope restriction did not survive enlargement.

This is becoming a pattern.

- A sign carries contact.
- Contact becomes interpretation.
  - Interpretation becomes confidence.
  - Confidence expands jurisdiction.

Soon the instrument is standing over an entire human population explaining what sort of thing it **really** is.

[Emmanuel Levinas](https://modalpathethics.com/emmanuel-levinas-and-the-infinite-claim/) has recently given Modal Path Ethics the cleanest resistance available here:

> **The other person exceeds the instrument by which we know them.**

The category can fit. The record can be accurate. The interpretation can contain real contact.

The locus remains larger.

Keep that.

We are going to need it badly.

Because Philipp Mainländer has **another** problem for us.

---

## Mainländer and the Thin Veil.

At the beginning of his essay on realism, Mainländer imagines the first objectively minded natural human turning toward self and world.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-190.png)

There is almost no settled illusion yet.

Mainländer says this early human saw truth through a **very thin veil**.

The world divided into the self and the forces standing against it. Polytheism emerged, on his telling, as a raw early reading of those forces.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-191.png)

This is weird.

Also understandable.

Mainländer is imagining an intelligence relation before enormous interpretive machinery accumulates.

**Later** philosophy has distinctions. Institutions. Systems. Inherited arguments. Technical vocabularies.

The **first human** has almost **none** of that.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-192.png)

So perhaps the relation between intelligence and reality is thinner there.

The distance has not yet filled with commentary.

Mainländer's larger philosophy will eventually become extraordinarily elaborate. The opening retains the fantasy that there was once an earlier point where reality arrived with less mediation attached.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-193.png)

Now, Friedrich August Wolf enters.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/Johann_Heusinger_Bildnis_Friedrich_August_Wolf_-1759-1824-.jpg)

And Wolf wants something **remarkably** similar.

---

## Friedrich August Wolf Builds a Window.

Wolf's project was larger than textual criticism.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-194.png)

His *Darstellung der Alterthums-Wissenschaft* attempted to organize the study of antiquity into an interconnected science. Language, literature, history, monuments, institutions, material remains and other disciplines were to participate in a larger reconstruction.

The object was not simply a big pile of old texts.

Wolf wanted **knowledge of** **ancient humanity**.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-195.png)

His language becomes strikingly strong at the end. He compares the culmination of this study to the ***epopteia*** of the Eleusinian mysteries: **contemplation of the most holy**. For modern scholarship, the corresponding attainment is knowledge of ancient humanity itself, reached through disciplined study of surviving remains and the organically developed national formation they disclose.

There it is.

- Mainländer imagined a first human standing near an unobscured world.
- Wolf **built a machine** for standing nearer an unobscured antiquity.

The similarity should not be overstated. Wolf knows perfectly well that antiquity arrives through damaged remains, difficult languages, missing works and historical reconstruction. His entire instrument exists because the path is mediated.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-266.png)

Still, his aspiration here strongly exceeds:

> *we will produce an interesting modern interpretation of some old material.*

The instrument is supposed to **restore enough relation that ancient humanity itself becomes available to intelligence.**

This is a contact instrument.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-197.png)

A secular one.

And [**Sacred Instruments**](https://modalpathethics.com/tag/sacred-instruments/) has already seen the religious form of the same motion.

---

## The Sacred Instrument Is Only Passing Through.

Al-Ghazali does not need another article today.

[Al-Ghazali and the Last InstrumentA Modal Path Ethics engagement with inherited certainty, philosophy, practice, revelation, and the limits of correction.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/icon/thin-tile.rulebook-2-8cbdbae7-3aec-4023-985a-42eb43189329.png)Modal Path EthicsAidan Lawson![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/thumbnail/al-ghazali-1-ac872e87-fc2d-4bed-b865-306e0c725a65.png)](https://modalpathethics.com/al-ghazali-and-the-last-instrument/)

He gets one paragraph.

Revelation points beyond the present interpreter toward God. Scripture, commentary, ritual, discipline, prayer, jurisprudence, contemplation and inherited practice can all understand themselves as ways of keeping some prophetic, divine or transcendent relation alive across time.

Modal Path Ethics did not need to deny contact in order to audit that claim.

The question was whether the human instrument still carried the contact it claimed to preserve, whether correction remained possible, whether the sacred relation had become indistinguishable from the authority of its current custodian.

That article eventually reached the rule that no humanly administered instrument gets to make the field lose its capacity to answer back.

Wolf is building the secular cousin.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-198.png)

- His rites are philological.
- His relics are manuscripts.
- His revelation is antiquity.
- His priesthood has footnotes.

Then the contact instrument starts producing a civilizational hierarchy.

---

## Civilizational Physiognomy.

Wolf's *Altertumswissenschaft* does not distribute its attention evenly.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-199.png)

He explicitly separates Greeks and Romans from Egyptians, Hebrews, Persians and other peoples of the East, whom he places lower in a hierarchy of civilization and spiritual culture. Greek antiquity becomes the privileged field through which the highest human formation can be studied.

Call the structure **civilizational physiognomy**.

Wolf did not use that phrase.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-200.png)

**Modal Path Ethics** is using it because the inferential movement has become familiar.

- Lavater reads character through the body.
- Schopenhauer reads the whole person through the face.
- Nietzsche reads type through morality and style.
- Wolf reads a civilization through its surviving manifestations.

Again, the problem cannot be:

> signs tell us nothing.

That would destroy history.

The danger arrives when the relation changes from:

> this sign permits contact

to:

> this sign grants transparent access

and then:

> my reconstruction now possesses the whole.

Wolf's instrument gets more sophisticated precisely because the surviving fragments are insufficient individually.

So he enlarges the window.

- Language.
- History.
- Literature.
- Art.
- Religion.
- Institutions.
- Material remains.

The whole civilization.

Wolf discovered that the window was dirty and responded by building a larger window.

---

## This Window Has a Provenance Problem.

Wolf's *Prolegomena ad Homerum* became one of the great landmarks of the Homeric Question.

It also became the center of a vicious priority dispute.

Christian Gottlob Heyne challenged the originality of Wolf's contribution. Wolf answered. Herder was involved in the surrounding field. Wolf himself reacted furiously to Herder's Homer essay. Modern histories of scholarship still treat the Wolf-Heyne conflict as a serious dispute over intellectual priority, methodological difference and the originality of the *Prolegomena*. This is not adequate evidence for a simple verdict like **WOLF PLAGIARIZED IT**. It is very good evidence that the work's intellectual lineage does not collapse cleanly into one sovereign origin.

The document that helped teach modern philology to distrust the clean origin does not possess a clean intellectual origin.

And it gets worse.

Recent scholarship has shown that Wolf's programmatic celebration of Greek cultural superiority in the *Darstellung* itself drew significantly upon the Roman rhetorician Quintilian in formulating its encyclopedic philological ideal.

So the Greek organism has Roman ligaments. Beautiful.

The provenance is distributed, not absent. Teachers. Predecessors. Books. Lectures. Manuscript discoveries. Conversations. Arguments. Conjectures. Published interventions. Priority claims. Students. Enemies.

The source is already a field.

Hans-Georg Gadamer now arrives to make the situation considerably worse.

---

## Wolf Discovers Homer Has a History.

## Gadamer Discovers Wolf Does Too.

Historical understanding does not take place from nowhere.

That is one of Gadamer's central corrections.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-203.png)

The interpreter is already historically situated. The questions asked of the past emerge from a horizon shaped by prior transmission. Tradition is not simply the object across the room. It is already operating inside the act of understanding.

Gadamer calls this historically effected consciousness.

> We never stand completely outside the situation whose effects we are trying to understand.

So Wolf's problem cannot be solved by making the philological window infinitely large. [The observer is also in the glass](https://modalpathethics.com/kendrick-lamar-and-the-return/).

- Wolf discovers that Homer has a transmission history.
- Gadamer discovers that **Wolf does too**.

That does not destroy historical contact.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-204.png)

It destroys a particular fantasy about contact.

> **Mediation is not the opposite of contact.**

For historical beings, **mediation** is often the condition under which contact remains possible at all.

Which means the question changes.

- We no longer ask whether the instrument can make itself disappear.
- We ask whether the instrument can remain visible **while the thing encountered still gets to answer through it**.

Georges Bataille has been waiting nearby with the axe.

---

## Bataille Refuses the Capture.

In *Inner Experience*, Bataille takes experiences of ecstasy, extremity, non-knowledge and the unknown seriously.

Then he does something extremely useful.

He refuses to let the intensity of the experience become possession of its object.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-206.png)

Inner experience, he says, cannot establish belief simply by occurring. To say with confidence that one has seen God, the Absolute, or the depths of the universe already converts what exceeded understanding into something understood and possessed by a category.

Call this:

> **contact without capture.**

Now, the whole article has a rule.

- Mainländer's primitive observer may have contact.
- The sacred practitioner may have contact.
- Wolf's philologist may have contact.
- The historian may have contact.
  - The face may disclose.
  - The body may disclose.
  - A moral philosophy may reveal something about the philosopher.
    - The contact can be extraordinary.
    - The contact can transform the observer.
    - The contact can even be more accurate than competing instruments.

> **None of that automatically establishes exhaustion of the thing contacted.**

  - A sign can carry contact.
  - Contact does not make the sign transparent.

And transparency, even where unusually strong, does not confer ownership.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-207.png)

Now we can finally get to Homer.

---

## Homer Is Missing.

Nietzsche already knew exactly where Wolf had opened the wound.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-209.png)

His 1869 inaugural lecture, *Homer and Classical Philology*, begins by describing philology as an unstable compound of history, natural science, aesthetics and pedagogy.

It wants historical peoples.

It wants language.

It wants classical exemplars.

It wants science and education at once.

Then Nietzsche reaches the Homeric Question.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-211.png)

By the time of later antiquity, he argues, the name **Homer** contains an enormous body of material. So he asks the central question:

- Did the person generate the conception?
- Or did the conception generate the person?

That is a devastating question for any sovereign-source model.

- The contact survived.
  - The simple object did not.

The *Iliad* still addresses us.

Its lines still work. Its grief still works.

Its violence certainly works.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-213.png)

The intelligence relation has crossed something like three millennia.

Yet the other end of that relation is no longer a neat little author-shaped socket into which we can plug the cable.

The Homeric Question does not ***destroy*** the relation. It breaks open what the relation has been carrying.

So enough reconstruction.

> **Wolf wanted ancient humanity.**

**Fine.**

> **Bring us the Greek.**

Open the *Iliad*.

The first thing waiting there is **Rage**.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-212.png)

---

## **Sing, Goddess, the Rage.**

Achilles has suffered a real wound.

Agamemnon takes Briseis.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-214.png)

The social world of the poem gives that act a specific structure. [Hegel, of all people](https://modalpathethics.com/hegel-and-the-preserved-wound/), is very good on this. Achilles's ***geras*** is a material share through which his honor and standing among the Achaeans are publicly recognized. Agamemnon's seizure therefore acts directly on a recognition relation inside the coalition.

There is already something ugly underneath this.

> **Briseis is a person.**

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-215.png)

The recognition machinery of two powerful men has turned her into the material through which their status dispute is conducted.

- Agamemnon injures Achilles by taking control of another locus.
  - Achilles correctly registers the injury to **himself**.

That is the first important result.

> **Rage can have real contact.**

Something happened. The wound is real.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-216.png)

The *calm* person in the room does not automatically have superior moral perception. Sometimes anger is the instrument through which a field refuses to let a violation become normal.

Modal Path Ethics cannot make emotional quiet the test of moral accuracy.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-217.png)

The problem arrives one transition later.

- Achilles withdraws.

He wants the Achaeans to discover what his standing meant by suffering through the field without him.

That is an extraordinary political move.

> **You will understand what you did to me when you discover what happens without me.**

- The function is real.
  - Achilles is extraordinarily important to the coalition.
- The dependency is real.
- His injury is real.
  - And now dependence becomes leverage.

The field is going to carry the proof.

This is where Modal Path Ethics can state the rule.

> **A wound grants standing, not jurisdiction.**

Achilles has standing to object.

He has standing to withdraw.

He has standing to demand repair.

He does not acquire title over every future that can be harmed through his withdrawal.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-218.png)

His indispensability does not make everyone else's continuance collateral in his recognition dispute.

No wound grants sovereignty over repair.

Hegel has an objection.

---

## Hegel Demands That We Stop Giving Achilles Moral Lectures.

Hegel explicitly anticipates the moral scold.

He imagines the critic asking how much harm Achilles's wrath caused, how little self-mastery he displayed, and what this says about him as a hero.

Hegel is unimpressed.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-219.png)

Achilles is Achilles. The energy of the particular character is part of what epic requires. Hegel says **Achilles** should not be treated like a schoolboy receiving a moral lecture.

Fine. Modal Path Ethics is not assigning Achilles detention.

Hegel's literary point is excellent.

The wrath supplies the organizing situation of the poem.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-220.png)

- Achilles is injured.
  - Achilles withdraws.
- The Trojans gain.
  - Patroclus enters.
    - Patroclus dies.
- Achilles returns.
  - Hector dies.

The wrath is not one psychological detail among others.

It organizes the epic field.

> Granted completely.

Then, one distinction.

> **Narrative unity is not moral jurisdiction.**

A wound can organize a story without acquiring authority over everyone the story contains.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-221.png)

History can become intelligible through a conflict without the conflict thereby justifying its own costs.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-223.png)

A later whole can retain a negated locus without giving that locus back the continuations it lost.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-224.png)

This is exactly where the recent Modal Path Ethics engagement with Hegel has been pressing: successor enrichment does not equal predecessor preservation.

Patroclus is about to demonstrate.

---

## Achilles Performs His Own Hostile Audit.

Spoiler: Patroclus dies.

Achilles finally sees what his first rage machine has cost.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-225.png)

Book XVIII gives us one of the strangest moments in the poem.

Achilles calls himself a useless burden. He recognizes that he did not save Patroclus or the other companions killed while he remained beside the ships.

Then he condemns the very instrument that brought him here.

> Let strife perish.

> Let anger perish.

> Anger can harden even a wise person.

> It becomes sweeter than honey.

> It rises like smoke.

Achilles has figured it out.

The correction is now complete.

Except then he immediately announces that he is going to find Hector.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-226.png)

This is one of the funniest and most horrifying things Homer could possibly have done for us.

> **Insight != correction.**

Achilles has audited rage.

He has identified its mechanism.

He knows the first target relation widened catastrophically.

He knows people he loved paid for it.

He understands that anger can harden the person who carries it.

**Then he finds a better target.**

Hector actually killed Patroclus.

> **This one is clean.**

> **This one deserves it.**

> *Oh no.*

---

## Hector Pays the Bill.

> Hector is killed.

The repair problem should now become obvious.

- **Patroclus remains dead.**

Nothing Achilles does to Hector's corpse can reopen Patroclus's future.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-227.png)

Nothing done to the corpse can restore the comrades already killed.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-228.png)

Nothing done to the corpse can undo Agamemnon's original injury.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-229.png)

- The original repair object is gone.
  - The second target is dead.
    - The rage continues.

Achilles drags Hector behind the chariot.

Again.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-230.png)

The corpse becomes the substrate through which the wound keeps acting.

This is where Bataille returns.

Ordinary instrumental explanation is running out.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-231.png)

The enemy has been defeated.

The tactical objective is complete.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-232.png)

The corpse cannot be deterred.

The corpse cannot learn.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-233.png)

The corpse cannot repair.

So destruction begins functioning as **expenditure**.

It expresses magnitude.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-234.png)

The wound was **this large**.

Patroclus mattered **this much**.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-235.png)

The rage requires a material language proportionate to itself.

And because reality cannot return Patroclus, Hector's body becomes something on which the demand can keep writing.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-236.png)

Simone Weil sees the larger machinery.

For Weil, the *Iliad* is the poem of **force**: force makes things of people, and possession of force also deforms the person who believes they possess it.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-237.png)

Achilles begins as someone against whom power has been abusively exercised.

Then he becomes the wielder.

- Agamemnon turned Briseis into material for rank.
- Achilles eventually turns Hector into material for grief.

> The injured locus has become an instrument user.

That is a sentence Modal Path Ethics has seen before.

---

## **Rage** Has a Jurisdiction Problem.

**Rage** is a [Field Instrument](https://modalpathethics.com/tag/field-instruments/).

It has a real job.

> **Make a violated relation impossible to ignore.**

Its jurisdiction does not automatically extend to:

> **Make every reachable relation answer to the violation.**

That is the Achilles failure.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-238.png)

A useful operational distinction appears.

- Rage as **contact**:

> Something is wrong.

- Rage as **selection**:

> This is the thing requiring response.

- Rage as **jurisdiction**:

> Because this thing requires response, the rage may determine the scale, target, duration and stopping condition of the response.

- The first can be indispensable.
- The second requires audit.
- The third is how Hector's corpse ends up circling a tomb.

Unfortunately, Modal Path Ethics has **extensive** experimental data on this.

---

## Modal Path Ethics Has Been Angry Before.

The corpus has a problem.

> Modal Path Ethics becomes fucking furious with surprising regularity.

[The first Prisoner's Dilemma article](https://modalpathethics.com/applied-case-the-prisoners-dilemma/) now begins with an editorial warning that Modal Path Ethics “flew into a violent frenzy” on first contact.

This warning was added because that is what happened.

Modal Path Ethics saw the payoff matrix, became enraged at what it thought the toy model was doing to public strategic imagination, kicked over the furniture, and later had to return with the actual cooperation literature.

The second article was better.

This did not establish:

> **anger made the first insight false.**

The initial complaint contained something real.

It established:

> **anger let the first insight choose too much too quickly.**

The repair produced the [*Field Intelligence Gap*](https://modalpathethics.com/applied-case-the-field-intelligence-gap/).

- **Strategic intelligence** asks how to win under the current rules.
- **Field intelligence** asks what game everyone inherits after the move.

That distinction became much stronger than the original rant.

> Lesson learned.

Obviously.

---

## Heidegger Is Allowed to Keep Some of His.

[The old Heidegger article](https://modalpathethics.com/heidegger-sorge-and-care/) is important here because the correction cannot become a new emotional bureaucracy in which every sharp sentence is retrospectively sterilized.

That article reaches the Nazi section and says:

> **This guy was a fucking Nazi, wasn't he?**

It then explicitly defends the rudeness.

The section argues that Heidegger's Nazi Party membership, rectorship at Freiburg, institutional participation and inadequate later reckoning belong to the field under analysis. The heat is doing work there because the philosophical discussion had too often floated at an altitude where institutional action became a biographical footnote.

Keep that.

A **rage** audit cannot begin from:

> anger is epistemically disqualifying.

Sometimes the crater is actually on fucking fire.

Sometimes understatement performs concealment.

Sometimes the relevant moral fact deserves language with impact.

The rule is harder:

> **The angry instrument must still preserve scale.**

- What work is the heat doing?
  - Against whom?
  - For how long?
- What claim does it support?
  - What claim is it being allowed to smuggle in?
- **Does the next person inherit it?**

Now, we arrive at August.

This is going to go badly.

---

## *The Argument Machine*.

[Modal Path Ethics joined Substack](https://modalpathethics.com/fictional-earth-substack-and-the-argument-machine/).

This lasted less than a week.

The resulting after-action report is probably the clearest self-audit in the corpus because almost **every** mechanism we need here is already stated explicitly.

- Modal Path Ethics became angry at strangers it had discovered minutes earlier.
- A sequence of individually defensible arguments began choosing the research agenda.
- The project stopped asking what it was missing and started asking who was missing Modal Path Ethics today.
  - Eventually the role hardened from interlocutor to critic to prosecutor to **Human Argument Machine**.

Then came the really important failure.

- A good-faith person entered an encounter carrying none of the history that had produced the current temperature.
  - They inherited it all anyway.

The article named the mechanism perfectly:

> **The Next Person Paid the Previous Person's Bill.**

The previous encounter had trained combat posture.

Ambiguity inherited hostility. Stored heat crossed targets.

The field had changed the reader before the next statement arrived.

That article was published on August 27.

Modal Path Ethics had audited Achilles.

The rage had been identified. The target-selection mechanism exposed. The stopping rule stated.

- A platform may nominate a question.
  - It cannot assign one.

> **Wonderful.**

> Now the correction is complete.

---

## Excellent.

## This Target Deserves It.

So within the next day of composition, Modal Path Ethics encountered **Irreplaceable**.

This is where the chronology becomes almost too perfect.

*The Argument Machine* article went public on August 27 at 7:21 p.m. [Irreplaceable's warning](https://modalpathethics.com/warning-irreplaceable-has-already-decided-what-its-democracy-will-discover/) went public early on August 29\. [*Phil Aroneanu and the Anger Engine*](https://modalpathethics.com/failed-field-analysts-phil-aroneanu-and-the-anger-engine/) followed that same evening.

Both barrels.

Day one.

The Irreplaceable critique had substance.

The organization presented itself as assembling a coalition that would resist first and develop a shared program later.

But Modal Path Ethics looked at the launch architecture and found that a **surprising** amount had already been selected: the political object, political subject, causal story, moral frame, organizing division, slogans, timelines and an immediate pause-and-public-control demand.

The democratic concern was real.

This is important:

**Modal Path Ethics did not hallucinate a new enemy in order to remain angry.**

It found a better target.

Exactly like Achilles.

> **Hector really did kill Patroclus.**

> Wonderful.

> That was not the correction.

---

## Modal Path Ethics Finds Hector.

The second article was even more extraordinary.

***Phil Aroneanu and the Anger Engine*** examined Irreplaceable's explicit plan to take existing anxiety and anger around artificial intelligence and convert that affect into political power.

The article traced the feedback machinery.

- Attention becomes measurable.
- Response becomes feedback.
  - Feedback modifies intervention.
    - Human affect becomes part of the control surface.

Then Irreplaceable says the anger is already present and the organization will direct it toward political power and the “right” targets.

Modal Path Ethics became fucking furious about **an organization using anger as an actuator**.

Approximately one day after publishing an article about how Modal Path Ethics had allowed anger to become an actuator for its own research agenda.

This is **art**.

The Aroneanu article eventually criticizes Irreplaceable for moving the **step back** downstream.

The older organizing model was:

- anger
  - → pause
    - → identify the object
      - → build the action.

The newer architecture looked more like:

- anger
  - → organize
    - → segment
      - → mobilize
        - → deepen identity
          - → direct pressure
            - → finish specifying the shared program later.

The charge was that the movement began acting on the field before it had finished determining what field it was in.

**Correct.**

Modal Path Ethics had just done the fucking thing.

- It had audited its rage.
  - **Stopped.**
    - *Looked around.*
      - ***Found Irreplaceable.***

> **Excellent.**
>
> **This one actually deserves it.**

That was the Achilles move.

- The target got better.
  - The instrument stayed in command.

---

## Finding a Better Hector Does Not Cure Achilles.

This is the chronology we were missing.

The **standard** self-correction story would have been flattering.

- Modal Path Ethics became angry.
- Modal Path Ethics noticed.
  - Modal Path Ethics built a correction.
  - Modal Path Ethics returned to serious inquiry.

That is **not** what happened.

> The rage survived the audit by changing jurisdictional justification.

- The first targets had been disproportionate?
  - **Fine.**
    - Find something proportionate.
- The original argument machine had attacked strangers?
  - **Fine.**
    - Attack an organization with actual power.
- The original anger had become intellectually repetitive?
  - **Fine.**
    - Find a case that genuinely extends the theory.

And the new work **did** extend the theory.

That is why the failure is difficult.

Achilles does not become stupid after Patroclus.

He becomes **frighteningly** well justified.

**Hector did it.**

Modal Path Ethics does not become analytically empty after Substack.

Irreplaceable **really does** contain the structure under criticism.

The dangerous inference is:

- **The last target was wrong.**
  - therefore:
    - **the rage only needed a better target.**

> ***No.***

The deeper correction is:

> **The rage no longer gets to choose its own continuation.**

That is very different.

---

## The Apologies Department Was Apparently Constitutional Engineering.

Modal Path Ethics has, by now, built an actual [**Apologies Department**](https://modalpathethics.com/tag/apologies-department/).

This initially appeared to be a joke.

It may be a real correction architecture.

[Roger Penrose received one](https://modalpathethics.com/modal-path-ethics-apologizes-to-roger-penrose/) after new evidence made an earlier dismissal look too confident and shitty.

The ruling was very specific.

- The claim-stack survived.
  - The personal heat did not.

The field had changed, so the map had to update.

*The Tiny Throne* argument remained.

Roger Penrose simply did not need to be beaten with it.

[The college newspapers](https://modalpathethics.com/modal-path-ethics-apologizes-to-the-college-newspapers/) received another.

There, Modal Path Ethics realized something even more embarrassing. It had accused a journal of allowing one bounded instrument to impersonate the whole philosophical field.

Then, Modal Path Ethics marched up to the journal and effectively demanded:

> **WHY ARE YOU NOT THE ENTIRE FIELD?**

The correction was excellent:

> **The instrument is allowed to be smaller than the field.**

- The original jurisdiction objection survived.
  - The demand changed scale.

This is starting to look less like public relations.

This is Priam.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-241.png)

---

## Priam Changes Who Is in the Room.

By Book XXIV, Hector is dead.

Achilles is still **raging**.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-240.png)

The gods themselves are sick of what is happening to the corpse.

Then Priam enters Achilles's shelter.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-242.png)

He introduces Achilles's father.

> Remember Peleus.

The relation changes.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-244.png)

Hector had become:

- **enemy.**
- **killer of Patroclus.**
- **Trojan champion.**
- **target.**
  - **corpse.**
  - **material through which Achilles's grief could continue moving.**

Priam adds:

> **my son.**

And in the same movement Achilles becomes:

> **someone's son.**

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-246.png)

The **rage** representation has not become false.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-243.png)

- Hector still killed Patroclus.
- Achilles still lost the person he loved.
- Troy is still the enemy city.
- The war has not vanished.
  - Another relation has entered.
  - That is enough.

Achilles weeps with Priam.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-247.png)

The body is washed.

Hector is returned.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-245.png)

Achilles grants the time required for burial before combat resumes.

The wrath begins to end when the corpse is allowed to become someone's son again.

That is a Levinasian interruption without requiring Homer to become Levinas.

The Other exceeds the representation.

Priam does not defeat Achilles's model of Hector.

He breaks its sovereignty.

---

## Hegel Was Waiting Here Too.

This is also why Hegel refuses to let the *Iliad* end with Hector's death.

Someone who thinks the story is finished there, he says, has misunderstood the ethical shape of the epic.

Death ends nature in one sense.

It does not finish the human claim.

Burial remains.

Priam remains.

Reconciliation remains.

The corpse must be returned.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-248.png)

Hector still belongs to relations that Achilles's victory has not erased.

The negated locus remains inside the later whole.

Fine, Hegel. Modal Path Ethics adds the cut:

- **retention is not restoration.**

Hector's burial does not give Hector his future back.

Patroclus's effect on Achilles does not give Patroclus his future back.

Achilles's transformation does not reimburse the Achaeans who died during the first rage.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-249.png)

Troy's immortal literary life does not reimburse Troy.

The whole can carry what it destroyed.

The whole cannot use that carrying as proof that nothing was lost.

---

## Bernard Williams Would Like the Greeks Back Now.

This is also where Bernard Williams becomes useful.

*Shame and Necessity* attacks the old developmental story in which Homeric people represent some ethically primitive stage from which modern reflective morality triumphantly escaped.

Williams wants the Greeks returned to us as serious agents.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-250.png)

Their shame, necessity, responsibility, luck and self-conception are not childhood versions of the ethical life. They reveal structures modern moral theory often hides.

Wolf's civilizational instrument creates a constant temptation to say:

> **the Greek mind.**

No.

Here is **Achilles**.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-251.png)

Here is **Agamemnon**.

Here is **Briseis**.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-252.png)

Here is **Patroclus**.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-254.png)

Here is **Hector**.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-255.png)

Here is **Priam**.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-256.png)

Here are the people who do not remain obediently inside the civilizational physiognomy we built to recover them.

Wolf succeeds when the instrument makes them more available to correction of our present account.

He fails where **Greek humanity** becomes an answer they are no longer allowed to contradict.

The contact instrument should make the dead harder to flatten.

Otherwise we have only built a more scholarly tomb.

---

## Nietzsche Was Already at the Corpse.

And now we finally discover that Nietzsche has been waiting at Hector the entire time.

In *Homer's Contest*, Nietzsche explicitly discusses Achilles dragging Hector.

He does not sanitize it.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-257.png)

He calls the act offensive and horrific and sees in it an abyss of hatred. From there he develops a larger account of Greek cruelty and of the ***agon***: destructive capacities can be given forms of contest that redirect them toward culturally productive competition rather than unbounded annihilation.

That is a serious insight.

> The contest is an instrument.

Aggression, ambition, status, and conflict do not disappear.

The question is whether a field can give these forces forms in which their expression contributes to shared continuance rather than simply converting the competitor into material.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-258.png)

Modal Path Ethics understands this move very well.

Been doing it all year.

The problem comes one step later.

- **The contest can discipline the rage.**
  - **It cannot reimburse Hector.**

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-259.png)

A civilization may become brilliant partly through how it organizes dangerous capacities. The brilliance does not transfer backward into the people those capacities destroyed.

A later cultural good cannot spend an earlier locus twice: once in history, then again in explanation.

Nietzsche can keep his ***agon***.

Hector keeps the wound.

---

## *Amor Fati*, Again.

We have now somehow returned to the article.

Nietzsche asked us to love fate.

**Fine.**

- Patroclus is dead.
- Hector is dead.
- Agamemnon made the insult.
  - Achilles withdrew.
    - The Achaeans paid.
- Hector killed Patroclus.
  - Achilles killed Hector.
    - The corpse was dragged.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/troy-drag.gif)

- Priam entered.
  - The body came home.

None of these transitions can be removed from the path.

That is exactly where ***amor fati*** becomes useful again.

The fitting lesson is not:

> everything that happened was good.

Or:

> everything that happened was necessary and therefore acquitted.

Also not:

> later greatness redeems every earlier loss.

Nor even:

> if I learned from my rage, the people who carried it were secretly lucky to participate in my development.

Absolutely not.

The **lesson** is smaller.

> **This is the field now.**

Repair begins from the extant relation. The past cannot be placed back into the option set. The wound remains past-true.

And the fact that the wound remains true does not authorize us to keep feeding it new bodies.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/20/43/2043f11a-6ae3-404c-bb28-01fce8d9ac88/content/images/2026/09/image-260.png)

That is where Modal Path Ethics and ***amor fati*** can stand beside one another without becoming the same doctrine.

Nietzsche says:

> **love fate.**

Modal Path Ethics says:

- **Affirm reality.**
  - **Audit the path.**

You do not need to call the wound beautiful.

You do need to stop demanding that reality become counterfactual before you will participate in repair.

That is enough.

## One Final Matter.

After all this, Nietzsche would like us to discuss **lunch**.

In *Why I Am So Clever*, he argues that nutrition matters more to human salvation than a great deal of philosophy apparently does. German cooking is blamed for German intellect. Piedmontese cooking wins. Alcohol is bad. Water is excellent. Coffee should be abandoned. Morning tea should be strong and used sparingly. Heavy meals are preferable to inadequate ones. Sitting around is dangerous. Good thoughts should be born outdoors while the body is moving.

He eventually concludes that prejudices originate in the intestines.

So.

After Wolf, Mainländer, Kant, Gadamer, Bataille, Lavater, Schopenhauer, Hegel, Weil, Williams, Levinas, Homer, Achilles, Agamemnon, Briseis, Patroclus, Hector, Priam, Substack, Irreplaceable, Roger Penrose, the Prisoner's Dilemma, the entire Apologies Department, and approximately three thousand years of accumulated interpretive failure, Friedrich Nietzsche has one final recommendation:

- **Drink water.**
  - **Go for a walk.**
    - **Skip the coffee.**

He may have the last word on lunch.
